  1. IOOS Unified Approach to Biology: The Role for DMAC Gabrielle Canonico, Bill Woodward April 30, 2019

  2. Building the IOOS Biology Community Focus: Sharing tools and skills to build a community around management of biological observing data. A sustained long-term biological observing capability requires community support to: Integrate across disciplines - physical, chemical, biology AND methods (eg satellite to in situ obs, animal tracking, ‘omics) Identify critical users and partnerships Identify key indicators to guide observing Contribute biological data to IOOS and OBIS Document and share best practices

  3. Existing IOOS Activities Sensors on buoys, autonomous gliders, and satellites observe different aspects of ocean and Great Lake systems. Video cameras record activities on the seafloor. Acoustic receivers monitor animal movement. Listening with hydrophones. Imaging Flow Cytobots (IFCBs) and Environmental Sample Processors (ESPs) detect and identify phytoplankton in real time. Documenting stakeholder needs. Advancing data standards for accessibility, integration and interoperability of disparate data (with MBON, ATN, OBIS, Marine Mammal Health Map, regional efforts, etc.)

  4. Some Next Steps Advance emerging observing technologies Explore IOOS role in ocean noise Expand RA access to fisheries data with NMFS Advance HAB data collection and management Enhance information products for users 2020 Workshop: Define the landscape for biodata • Document data-related guidance and workflows • GBIF and OBIS use DwC so that sets the standard BUT when are other standards appropriate? • How can we engage CF convention? (some in academia are resistant to netCDF, haven’t heard of CF - how to engage them and build consensus) Global engagement - Ocean Best Practices, TDWG, OBIS, GOOS Essential Ocean Variables
