Comparison between Samsung Gear VR, Oculus Rift, Google Cardboard, PlayStation VR and HTC Vive: Top Three Virtual Reality Devices
Google cardboard Cardboard is a very economic and simple device. Google has put its research into developing a $20 hardware made out of cardboard to give a VR experience. It is like an eye wear. It makes use of software VR installed in android phone as well as its sensors to experience VR. It is a mediocre immersion level device. Since android smartphones are many times underpowered, users get a choppy experience. But it is definitely worth its value
Samsung and Oculus have come together and created gear VR. Gear is a VR headset which is leaps and bounds ahead of cardboard. It costs $100, has its own robust hardware. It also has its own sensors and VR compatible headphones. It makes use of its own sensors and tat of smartphone docked in it. This VR headset is made exclusively for high end Samsung devices. As those phones have super Amoled displays, experience is immersive. However it has a limited level of interaction and therefore it can only be used for video viewing.
Oculus Rift Oculus started from Kickstarter campaign. Now it is backed up by Facebook. Oculus rift is a full featured VR headset. It itself costs $500. It requires a powerful gaming PC to run. It can work at almost all levels of interaction. It comes with a gaming remote and a swipe mechanism remote. Motion controllers for rift will be deployed next year. It can be used for watching films, simulation, motion and VR gaming even for multiplayer gaming
HTC VIVE HTC vive is made in collaboration with HTC and Valve. It costs nearly $700. HTC vive has more features than Rift. It has more and precise sensors. It has a front cam to interact with outside environment. It comes with motion controllers out of the box. It has room motion trackers which can be kept in the room and motion of the user can be tracked.
Play Station VR PSVR or PlayStation VR is a virtual reality platform by Sony. It has a headgear for $400. It comes with motion controller and a dual shock 4 controller by Sony. It needs a PlayStation 4 to run. PS4 is cheaper than all those gaming rigs. Developing for one platform will help Sony push in only one direction hence faster results. However it depends upon popular adoption of PSVR if any development will be done or not. It can also be pre-ordered.
Sony has always pushed software experience and updates so surely PSVR will be lag free. However as PS4 is underpowered as compared to gaming PCs, it is to be seen what kind of development will be done for PSVR.
These were some of the VR devices launched till date. Each one of these VR platforms have something interesting and unique to offer to the users.
