Reported in miles and fractions of miles. • Prevailing visibility is the greatest horizontal distance that specified objects can be seen over at least one-half of the horizon, not necessarily continuous. • Variable visibility is explained in the remarks section • Automated stations use an “M” to indicate “less than.” For example, M 1/4SM means less than one-quarter statue mile visibility.
