  2. The House on Mango Street30 mins. • OER (remember: answer, explanation, and text evidence) • What does Esperanza think of her Aunt Lupe? Use evidence from the text to support your answer. • Example stems: • Esperanza thinks her Aunt Lupe is ______________ because _________________. (add text evidence here) • Esperanza feels ____________ about her Aunt Lupe because _________________. (add text evidence here)

  3. Analyzing film is similar to analyzing a story (pg. 80) 1 min. Film and art are essentially “visual texts” As with a written text, you can analyze, justify, and critique the director or artist’s choices I’m going to show you two film clips As you watch them respond to each by noting the costumes, props, sets, and acting choices (acting can include movement, gestures, voices, etc) Take notes in the graphic organizer on page 80

Use as many details from the film clip as you can (this is your “textual evidence”)

  6. Football versus Family • What does “Bend it like Beckham” mean? • Who is Beckham? • What does it mean to “bend it?” • What other terms are exclusive to soccer? • Watch the film clip and think about the conflicts presented and the characters

  7. Football versus Family • Who are the characters? • What is the conflict so far? • What do you think the rest of the film will be about? • What is internal conflict? External conflict? • Take notes on these two terms on page 81 (at the blank space on the top)

  8. Internal Conflict • Conflict that occurs within a character (usually mentally) • Man vs. Self • Examples: Should I do my homework or play the Xbox? Should I ask the teacher a question or just pretend to know what I’m doing?

  9. External Conflict • Conflict that comes from OUTSIDE the character • Man vs. Man • Man vs. Nature • Man vs. Society • Examples: • A fight between two students in the hallway • A hurricane in the middle of class • Not following the school dress code

Quickwrite • Write about a time when your parents or other family members had expectations for you that were different from their own. • Why do parents have expectations for their children? • Where do these expectations come from? • Why do parental expectations not always match children’s expectations?

  11. Questions to consider • How are Jess and Jules similar or different in the conflicts they face? • What is a “proper woman” to Jess’s family? • How are the scenes with the soccer team filmed? • How is the music used? • Why does Jess talk to Beckham? Writing Prompt bottom of pg. 81
