Warm-Up 8/28/12Write down the verb from each sentence and label it transitive, intransitive, or linking. • Regis Philbin, the host of "Who Wants to be a Millionaire," smiled at her answer. • When the contestant completed the first test, she received another clue. • Dennis became impatient when Thomas took so long choosing a movie. • President Clinton pushed into the crowd and shook her hand. • The hiker turned quickly toward the noise behind him. • Our teacher gave each of us another chance to take the exam. • After the chef completed the demonstration, she left the students to clean the kitchen.

  2. Active v. Passive Voice • Active voice: the verb expresses an action done by its subject. • John drove the car. • Passive voice: the verb expresses an action done to its subject. • The car was driven by John. • Avoid passive voice! • Anonymous (or with preposition... Wordy): • The room was cleaned. The room was cleaned by Maria. • The flowers were cut. The flowers were cut by John. • The light was turned on. The light was turned on by magic. • Robs the subject of action! • Uses mostly linking verb+ “action” verb • MAY be useful when the subject is unknown. (“The bank was robbed at midnight.”) or when trying to emphasize the object of the sentence instead of the subject.
