Atomic structure pt 2Isotopes… Ya played with some m&m candy… make me some intel from it!!!
A pack of m&ms had different colors… different masses… • So you took the average of them… got a non-whole number • Isotope = same element but different mass # • Like different colored m&ms… still m&ms but with different colors • Yummy… yarp…
Isotopes don’t change: • 1. the element’s chemical properties • 2. the element’s reactive properties • Isotopes DO change • 1. nuclear reactions • yarpness
Speaking of which • Neutrons = stabilize and add mass to an atom • Protons = unique properties of the element Lead is lead because of 82 protons Gold is gold because of 79 protons These can NOT change • Electrons = chemical reactivity/changes of an atom These can and will change with chemical reactions • yarp
Math time… • Calculation of weighted averages • (isotope amu)(%abundance) = weighted prop. 100 do this for each isotope • Add up weighted proportions = ave. atomic mass • DO NOT DIVIDE BY THE # WEIGHTED PROP.
No more!!! • Get to work!!!!
Atomic structure pt 3Optional notes depending on what you have already done… Time to bring things up to speed!!!! Add some sweet demos to make life good
How did we find the sub atomic particles? • Electrons and protons found by charge William Crookes designed… J.J. Thompson found electrons Eugene Goldstein did similar work to find proton • yarp
The nucleus was found Ernst Rutherford doing the gold foil experiment • Neutrons hardest to find… no charge Found through scatter math and particle bombardment by Irene Curie & James Chadwick wrapped it up • yarp
Nuff on the history... • Time to live in the now… • Quantum mechanics and da atom!!!! • Hey… that is the new powerpoint….. I hope it is open… • yarp
