What is it? Fan fiction is a broadly-defined term for fan labour regarding stories about characters or settings written by fans of the original work, rather than by the original creator. Works of fan fiction are rarely commissioned or authorized by the original work's owner, creator, or publisher; also, they are almost never professionally published.
Cont’d Most fan fiction writers assume that their work is read primarily by other fans, and therefore tend to presume that their readers have knowledge of the universe (created by a professional writer) in which their works are based.
Qualities Fan Fiction allows the reader to become part of the creative process, which also gives the reader/writer some ownership into the world of the characters and where they feel the story should proceed.
Example Remember, remember the 5th of NovemberThe Gun Powder Treason and plotI know of no reason why the Gun Powder Treason Should ever be forgot. It has been a year since the fall of Parliament. There was to be a big celebration. The interim Government had deemed the 5th of November a holiday. In fact it was to be known as Revolution Day. The way it was celebrated, was the people donned their costumes, the ones that V had sent which included, a Guy Fawkes mask, a shoulder length black wig, a wide brimmed hat, and a long black cape. V’s was the face that signified the day, how ironic, he hid his true face from the world, but his masked face was the most recognizable. Evey stood on the roof of the building that was above the Shadow Gallery. This was the roof where she was reborn, this was the roof where she watched the houses of Parliament go up in flames, this was the roof where she watched the man she loved go to his glorious end. A sad sweet smile crossed her lips as she remembered the man…of him in a floral apron flipping an egg and serving her tea, of a man who fought imaginary battles with a suit of armour, a man who risked his life and his sanity by setting her free of her fear, a man who danced with her on that fateful night, of a man who professed his love for her and then went willingly to embrace death. Tears silently spilled down her face as she remembered the man. Finally she spoke, “No one will ever forget you V, I will make certain of that…You may have given England a gift of Freedom and Hope…But you gave me the greatest gift of all…a gift of self, a gift of purpose, a gift of love, but most of all…a gift of life.” She looked down at the small bundle cradled in her arms…her son, no, their son, William Victor Hammond. He was the greatest gift that V had bestowed upon her, and she would make sure that he lived his life just as his father would have intended. ~~V~~
