The “Four Rs”As Developed by The LennickAberman Group Narrated by Doug Lennick Compiled by Cathy Tryggestad for 2010 MASE Leadership Cohort
The 4 Rs (skills) • Recognition . . . Recognize • Reflection . . . . Reflect • Reframing . . . . Reframe • Responding . . . Respond
Recognition • Recognizing what’s actually happening with real experience • Thought • Emotions • Physiology (action) Defines human experience
Recognize Recognition • Cognitive • Emotional • Physical • Thinking • Feeling • Doing
Recognize Understand if my physiology is working for or against decision making. • Exuberant/Excited – may be working against me to make a good decision (chemical) • Scared/Anxious -- may not be in the best place to make a clear decision
Recognition • Able to recognize • . . .what I’m thinking • . . .how I’m feeling • . . .what’s going on with me physiologically Recognize and understand is this a good time to be making decisions?
Things Outside • What are the things going on outside of me that may be stimulating my experience • Positive? • Negative? Outside stimulation will stimulate emotionally first, caught up in things excited scared Caught up in things --> not a good time to make decisions
Need to Pause • “What am I thinking?” • “How am I feeling emotionally?” • “What am I actually doing?”
Reflection • Need to reflect on the “big picture” • Need to reflect on the long term as it relates to my circumstances • Need to reflect on my personal values • Need to reflect on moral principles that apply to all • Integrity, responsibility, compassion, forgiveness • Need to reflect on the competencies that matter most • MY Moral and Emotional Competencies
Reflect • Factors that are going to help me make a good decision in all situations.
Reframing • Reframe ‘self-talk’ to account for biases • Confirming Data • Overconfidence • Reframe ‘self talk’ to avoid a reflexive response to highly charged emotions • Reframe ‘self talk’ to be constructive
Reframing Make ‘self-talk’ constructive not destructive
Respond • Make a choice • Consistent with our goals • Consistent with our values
The 4 Rs • Practiceto re-train your brain
