. CONTACT, HELP, ADVICE AND INFORMATION NETWORKS Presentation/demonstration 23.9.04
Origins of CHAINs • lack of map of people involved in research, evidence based practice (EBP), & related education/training • channel of communication with and between interested people researchers, clinicians, managers, teachers +++
Purposes of C.H.A.I.N. • show who is doing what • facilitate multi-professional and inter-organisational collaboration • remove barriers between research and practice - potential benefits for research and implementation
C.H.A.I.N. members’ main interests / specialties* *diagram as at May 2002, N=2730
The C.H.A.I.N. Directory... • internet access (password protected) • a freeresource for allmembers • not available in libraries or intranets • notlike a phone directory • notlike an e-mail discussion group • definitely not like Medline or Cochrane
Targeted messages • members’ calls for help - evidence sought • calls for help - advice/examples/policies sought • calls for help - collaborators sought • offers of bursaries, studentships, awards etc. • invitations to participate in relevant events • targeted dissemination of research evidence • research calls/funding opportunities
CHAINs and their members... • motivated & responsive to messages • like to broadcast, but appreciate targeting • pleased with searches and responses to messages • reach deep into ‘the pyramid’ – advantage of e-mail • can be used as a regional or local (SHA) tool to manage contacts and information and to enable targeted multiple e-mailings • Give access to an unparalleled pool of tacit knowledge
NUSU CHAINs currently... • now 2 CHAINs: R&D/EBP and WBL • evaluation of R&D/EBP CHAIN (c1) BMJ 12/5/04 • R&D/EBP (c1) 3,000+ members (origins 1997) • WBL (c2) 400+ members (launched Apr 2004) • hundreds of targeted messages sent/received • physical ‘learning & sharing’ events successful linkage, overlap and x-cutting sub-groups • Common values: voluntary, multi-professional & free • further NHSU CHAINs to be established
New CHAINs must: • have an appropriate range of focus • be seeking functions which can be met by a CHAIN • fit with the underpinning principles of CHAINs • identify key information for joining form • resource database development • demonstrate commitment to facilitate – individual(s) with knowledge of the subject (min 1-2 days/week) • engage with the wider family of CHAINs • have a collaborative relationship with NHSU
NHSU CHAINs team will: • support development of a joining form • oversee database development • train the facilitator in searching etc. • support recruitment of members • manage data input and maintenance • send targeted messages (in collaboration with facilitator) • provide help to members with searching etc. • demonstrate CHAIN at conferences, meetings etc.
