Data Analysis & Probability M7D1.b Construct frequency distributions.
Frequency distribution: a table that organizes data to show how many times each item or group of items appears. (May also be called frequency table.) Words to Know
Twenty-five students were asked to name their favorite singer/music group/rapper. The results are as follows: Kesha, Lil’ Wayne, Lady Gaga, Lil’ Wayne, Eminem, Kesha, Eminem, Lady Gaga, Lil’ Wayne, Eminem, Justin Bieber, Lady Gaga, Lil’ Wayne, Lil’ Wayne, Eminem, Justin Bieber, Kesha, Eminem, Eminem, Eminem, Eminem, Kesha, Eminem, Lil’ Wayne, Lil’ Wayne • Construct a frequency distribution using the data provided. • We need to determine what our table should look like. • It should have two columns; one for singer and one for frequency • It should have 6 rows; the top row for the lables “singer” and “frequency” and each of the following rows should have a singer name on the left and the frequency on the right. • Once we do that, we can organize the data. Sometimes data is grouped into categories before it is organized into a frequency distribution. 30 teachers were asked to name as many bands/singers/rappers as they could think of that their students listened to. Here is the number of bands 30 teachers could name. 0, 0, 0, 1, 2, 2, 2, 3, 3, 3, 3, 3, 4, 4, 5, 5, 5, 5, 7, 8, 9, 10, 10, 10, 10, 10, 13, 14, 17, 18 • Construct a frequency distribution, but first group the data into categories. • Categories will be • Number who could name 0 – 3. • Number who could name 4 – 7. • Number who could name 8 – 11. • Number who could name 12 – 15. • Number who could name 16 – 19. Remember to determine who many columns and rows we are going to need for our table!! Practice 2
