Causes of the Mexican War • Another reason of the war was the Annexation of Texas as 28th state • Boundary dispute: US supported Texas claim that the Rio Grande River while Mexico claimed the boundary at the Nueces River • President Polk ordered General Taylor to the Rio Grande River. Causes of the Mexican War • U.S. President James Polk also demanded that Mexico pay for damages to property in Texas. • U.S. President Polk sent John Slidell to Mexico to negotiate, but Mexico refused to talk
EVENTS OF MEXICAN WAR • Gen. Taylor refused to move troops east of Nueces River. • On April 25, 1846, Mexican troops attack. • May 13, 1846: outbreak of Mexican War.
U.S. VICTORY • General Taylor led an offensive into northern Mexico and captured victories at Monterrey and Buena Vista. • General Winfield Scott captured Mexico City in September 1847.
MEXICAN WAR 1846-1848 • After only a few months of fighting, the U.S. had gained control of much of the territory north of Mexico City.

EFFECTS OF THE WAR • Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo: U.S. acquired half of northern Mexico which became the states of California, Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico, Utah • Mexico recognized the annexation of Texas and the Rio Grande as the border. • Mexico received $18.25 million for Land known as the Mexican Cession.
EFFECTS OF THE MEXICAN WAR • Santa Anna lost power in Mexico after the war. • Gen. Taylor used his fame to win the Presidency of 1848. • Relations between Mexico and U.S. remained tense. • The war served as a training ground for men that would lead the armies of the Union and Confederacy during the American Civil War.
