FASFA Free Application for Federal Student Aid www.fasfa.ed.gov For US Citizens • TASFA • www.collegeforalltexans.org • Student without citizenship documentation • Lived in Texas 36 months prior to high school graduation • Graduated from an accredited public or private high school or GED program • Complete an affidavit stating your intent to apply for Permanent Resident status OR Students should NEVER pay to apply for federal or state aid
Types of Federal/State Aid • Loans • Borrowed money that must be repaid. • Types of Federal/State Aid • Types of Federal Loans • Subsidized • Unsubsidized • Parent PLUS • (Parent Loans for Undergraduate Students • Grants Need based funds the student does not repay. • Work Study Need based award which allows the student to participate actively in meeting the cost of their education while gaining valuable work experience. *All Federal loans accrue interest by each type differs in how and when interest is accrued
When to apply Applications available JANUARY 1 every year • Additional Forms may be required • UNT Dallas requires students to be admitted before a financial aid package will be determined Student s check with their school of choice for deadlines and processing procedures

Common FAFSA errors • Parent /Student Social Security Numbers • Parent w/o Social Security Number should enter all zero • Divorced/Remarried parental information • Income earned by parents/students • Untaxed income • Household size • Filing Status • Parents who are married; must file a married status

Receiving Your Awards Pending Aid Scholarships the student has been awarded and/or financial aid the student has "Accepted" on a . Pending Aid does NOT include Parent (PLUS) Loans that have been denied due to adverse credit history by the lender or College Work-Study. Parent (PLUS) Loans will count toward Pending Aid if SFAS has received a credit approval from the lender.
Receiving Your Awards Tuition & Fees - Pending Aid Remaining Balance You can pay the remaining balance by cash, check or credit card OR you can utilize theInstallment Planand/or Short Term Loanoptions offered through Student Accounting. *Credit Not Approved
Receiving Your Awards • Your financial aid will be ready to disburse to your UNT student account once you have: • Accepted your awards • Completed all To Do List items • Registered for sufficient hours Fall & Spring awards begin disbursing to UNT a week before classes begin. Pending Aid that has disbursed will be viewed as Financial Aid. Summer aid will disburse once attendance requirements are met.
Receiving Your Awards Disbursement of Aid • Funds disburse to Student Accounting and University Cashiering Services (SAUCS) to pay current tuition and fee charges. • SAUCS will then issue a refund to student via the student’s selected method: • HigherOne Debit Card (Obtained through the University) • Direct Deposit into another personal bank account • Paper Check You are responsible for paying your books, transportation, school supplies and any personal expenses
Maintaining Your Eligibility • What can affect a student’s eligibility to receive financial aid? • Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) • Dropping classes • Withdrawing from classes • Exceeding loan limits • Defaulting on loans • Owing a prior year balance
REMINDERS • File your taxes early • Complete your FAFSA/TASFA early and thoroughly • Apply for Financial Aid & Scholarships separately • Don’t pay someone for assistance with the FAFSA/TASFA or researching scholarship opportunities • Keep copies of all correspondence with the Federal Processor and the financial aid office • Check your student portal and university e-mail regularly
