  2. Background • Zwingli lived from 1484-1531 • Born in modern-day Switzerland (back then it was the Swiss Confederation) • It was made up of 13 city-states called cantons • Almost died in 1519 from the Bubonic Plague

  4. Music in the Church • Zwingli saw music as a distraction in the Church • He had a particular dislike for the organ because he thought it represented the Catholic Church • He recommended selling organs to give money to the poor

  5. Differences from Luther • Luther wrote 95 theses; Zwingli wrote 67 these • Luther said salvation came through faith; Zwingli said it came through good deeds • Luther believed that the body and blood of Christ were spiritually transformed in the bread and wine; Zwingli saw it as symbolic (Communion)

  8. Civil War • The Swiss Confederation was split between Catholics and Protestants • Catholics wanted to form a union with Charles V, the Holy Roman Emperor • In 1531, the Catholics waged a surprise attack on the Protestants

  9. Zwingli marched out with his army and was killed in battle • His successor was Heinrich Bullinger • At the Treaty of Kappel, each canton would pick its religion • Switzerland is half Protestant and half Catholic today

  10. Why is Zwingli not as Well-Known? • “The side that wins in history, writes the history”

Create a song • Create a song that meets the following requirements • Must be about the Reformation and must be appropriate • Is 20 lines long (each line must have at least 5 words) • Must have some type of rhyming pattern • IF YOU PERFORM THE SONG IN FRONT OF THE CLASS YOU WILL EARN 2 EXTRA CREDIT POINTS

  12. Group work • In groups, you will do the following: • Compare and contrast Luther, Zwingli, Calvin and Knox • You need at least four similarities and four differences between all four of the leaders • You need four pictures and color • Use your notes • You can set it up anyway you would like
