Bark Beetles. By: Marissa Cheyne. Spruce Beetle. (Dendroctonus rufipennis). Hosts- Engelmann spruce, rarely lodge pole pine. Red-Brown boring dust on bark through Mid May- July. Attack Trees less than 12 inches diameter. Red Turpentine Beetle. (Dendroctonus valens).

  2. Spruce Beetle (Dendroctonus rufipennis) Hosts- Engelmann spruce, rarely lodge pole pine Red-Brown boring dust on bark through Mid May- July Attack Trees less than 12 inches diameter

  3. Red Turpentine Beetle (Dendroctonus valens) Host: Ponderosa and lodge pole pine. Can infest any pine species Largest & Weakest Trees are attacked: Trees also injured by fire, logging, and other damages Beetle gallery Very Large Red Pitch tubes

  4. Western Pine Beetle (Dendroctonus brevicomis) Host: Ponderosa Pine Kills trees that are less than 6 inches

  5. Mountain Pine Beetle (Dendrotonusponderosae) Hosts: All Native and introduced species of pines Kills trees less than 5 inches

  6. Douglas Fir Beetle (Dendroctonus pseudotsugae) Hosts: Douglas Fir, Western Larch Attack trees less than 12 inches

  7. Ambrosia Beetle (Trypodendronspp) Hosts: True Firs, Spruce, Douglas Fir, Hemlock, Larch, Pine Attacks tree that are weak, dying or recently cut
