What do you know? 1. What is cancer? Cancer is the uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells. 2. What causes cancer? Somehow genes are damaged through exposure to a carcinogen (cancer causing agent) or “damaged” by heredity.(EX. Breast ovarian, prostate, colon, kidney, eye, skin and more) Click on the cells for video links

What are the warning signs of cancer? 1. Change in bowel or bladder habit 2. A sore that does not heal 3. Unusual bleeding or discharge ( Ear, nose, lungs, rectum, vagina, bladder) 4. Thickening or lump in breast or elsewhere 5. Indigestion or difficulty swallowing 6. Obvious change in wart or mole 7. Nagging cough or hoarseness

What lifestyle changes can I make to help prevent my risk of cancer? • Avoid tobacco –all forms • Avoid weed • Choose foods with less fat, eat more fruits and veggies, whole grains • Exercise • Avoid UV rays from the sun or tanning salons • Wear sunscreen and protective wear • Get check ups and screenings for cancer • When an adult drink moderately • Avoid sex until a committed relationship

Do you know your ABCDEs? A Asymmetry: Normal moles or freckles are completely symmetrical. If you were to draw a line through a normal spot, you would have two symmetrical halves. Border: A mole or spot with blurry and/or jagged edges Color: A mole that is more than one hue is suspicious and needs to be evaluated by a doctor. Normal spots are usually one color. This can include lightening or darkening of the mole. Diameter: If it is larger than a pencil eraser (about 1/4 inch or 6mm), it needs to be examined by a doctor. Breast cancer is not just a girl issue! • About 1 in 8 U.S. women (just under 12%) will develop invasive breast cancer over the course of her lifetime. • About 2,350 American men will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year.
