CIMMSE TC Wind GroupConference Call Wednesday, May 8th, 2013 11:30 AM
Agenda • Climatology Paper Update • Error Function Update
Climatology Paper Update • Draft of paper has been completed (WAF) • Overview • Decay once over land • NDFD verification using CRONOS/H*Wind Analyses • Gust factors as function of location, sustained wind speed, and wind direction • Will forward copy of draft soon for review • Comments encouraged
Error Function Update • Can create improved Holland Interpolated Wind Field: Holland_Improved(q, d) = Holland_Interp(q, d) - Normalized Holland Interp Error Function (q, d) * Max Wind • Likewise, can create improved Modified Rankine Wind Field: Rankine_Improved(q, d) = Rankine_Interp(q, d) - Normalized Rankine Interp Error Function (q, d) * Max Wind
Summary • In general, Modified Rankine with error function appears superior to other interpolations • Improvements most dramatic near core of storm • Do not need to code much within TCMWindTool (just add function to interpolated wind fields) • Will make images and radial plots available online for viewing • Comments welcome • Focuses this month: • Climatology paper edits, taking into account comments from the wind team • TC Boundary Layer Literature Review • Set up focus for modeling studies
TCWindReduction Smart Tool Reid Hawkins, SOO Wilmington, NC
Smart Tool WindReductionFactor Grid • WindGustFactor & WindReductionFactorgrids ISC sharable. • Names and number of edit areas areconfigurable. • 1st guess reduction percentages areconfigurable. • Edit areas should be set up prior to event, • but could be changed on fly by focal point.
