  5. August 1934: Hitler becomes Fuhrer.

  7. Hitler violates Treaty of Versailles by rearming Germany

  8. October 1935: Mussolini invades Ethiopia

  9. 1936

  10. March 1936: The Nazis begin their aggression by occupying the Rhineland.

  11. 1937

  12. July 1937: Japan sweeps into China.

  13. 1938

  14. March 1938: The Nazis march into Austria after its annexation.

  15. Spring 1938: Immediately after the Austrian Anschluss, Hitler demands the Sudetenland in Czechoslovakia.

  16. September 1938: Hitler meets with Neville Chamberlain, British prime minister, to discuss the future of Czechoslovakia at the Munich Conference. Chamberlain declares “peace in our time.” Munich was the height of appeasement.

  17. “ Goose-stepping over the spineless.”

  18. Britain begins to rearm.

  19. October 1938: Hitler demands his next target, the Danzig Corridor in Poland.

  20. 1939

  21. March 1939: Britain announces it will defend Poland if Germany invades. Poland refuses German demands.

  22. August 1939: Nazi-Soviet Pact

  23. September 1939: German Blitzkrieg crushes the Poles. World War II has begun.
