1. DNA Structure Review • DNA = Deoxyribonucleic acid • Shaped like a double helix • Nucleotide Monomers are made of a phosphate, a sugar and a base. • The order of the bases determine what you look like.
2. How does your body make new DNA? • Every time your body makes new cells, it must first make new DNA. • The parent cell replicates its DNA and then splits into two. • Each daughter cell has identical DNA to the parent cell.
3. DNA Replication Step 1 - First the enzyme helicase unzips the two DNA strands by breaking the weak hydrogen bonds between the bases.
3. DNA Replication 1 - First the enzyme helicase unzips the two DNA strands by breaking the weak hydrogen bonds between the bases.
3. DNA Replication Replication Fork Step 1 - First the enzyme helicase unzips the two DNA strands by breaking the weak hydrogen bonds between the bases.
3. DNA Replication Step 2 – Another enzyme called DNA Polymerase attaches New DNA nucleotides to the parent DNA templates.
3. DNA Replication Original DNA strands Step 3 – The new bases are joined by the third enzyme Ligase and two identical DNA molecules now exist.
3. DNA Replication Newly assembled DNA strands Step 3 – The new bases are joined by the third Enzyme Ligase and two identical DNA molecules now exist.
DNA Template Parental DNA New DNA 4. Why is DNA called semi-conservative? • DNA Replication is called semi-conservative because each new DNA molecule has one parent template strand and one new DNA strand.
