  3. What is the function of the endocrine system? • The endocrine system controls daily functions in the body and controls long-term changes and development.

  4. What is a gland? • A gland is an organ that makes and releases chemicals directly into the bloodstream.

  5. What is a hormone? • A hormone is a chemical that turns on, turns off, speeds up, or slows down the activity of other organs

  6. The Hypothalamus • Links the nervous system and the rest of the endocrine system together • Gets input from the brain, then sends messages to the other endocrine organs • Controls such things as hunger, thirst, sleep cycle, and body temperature

  7. The Pancreas • Function: controls blood sugar • Makes two hormones: Insulin and glucagon • Insulin decreases blood sugar • Glucagon increases blood sugar

  8. The Adrenal Glands • Function: triggers response in emergency situations • Makes the hormone adrenalin • Adrenalin gets you ready for fight-or-flight

  9. The Pituitary • Function: controls growth and development, blood pressure, and water balance in the body • Makes many hormones, the most commonly known being growth hormone

  10. The Testes • Makes testosterone • Function: controls male secondary sex characteristics, including the making of sperm

  11. The Ovaries • Makes two hormones: Estrogen and progesterone • Function: controls female secondary sex characteristics and partially controls the menstrual cycle

  12. The Thyroid • Function: controls metabolism (the breakdown of sugar and rate of cellular respiration) • Makes the hormone thyroxin
