  1. EARTH2CLASS, SCHOOL OF ROCK, AND OTHER EXEMPLARY TEACHER ENHANCEMENT PROGRAMS Michael J. PassowEarth2Class Workshops for Teachers Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory of Columbia University, Palisades, NY 10964 michael@earth2class.org 2007 GSA Denver Paper # 202-10 Professional Development for the Professional Developers: Aspects of Effective Teacher Professional Development Programs in the Earth Sciences

  2. How can a professional development program be designed to address the multiple and varied needs of teachers of Earth Science? It … • Should be based on combination of science content and practical classroom applications • Should provide combination of “live” and Internet-based resources • Should foster scientist-teacher interactions • Should enable “master teachers” to mentor less experienced colleagues • Should stimulate additional learning opportunities

  3. Earth2Class Workshops for TeachersLamont-Doherty Earth Observatory ofColumbia University Unique program now in 11th series • Monthly workshops bringing research scientists and classroom teachers together to examine cutting-edge investigations and curriculum applications • Web-based approach to disseminating scientific and educational resources www.earth2class.org

  4. “E2C Team” • Dr. Michael J. Passow • Dr. Cristiana Mattos Assumpção Educational Technology CoordinatorColégio Bandeirantes, São Paulo, Brazil • Frederico Dalmas Baggio Chief Technology Officer, Baggio Technologies, São Paulo, Brazil • Dr. Gerardo J. IturrinoScientific Content/NSF Grant Principal InvestigatorAssociate Research Scientist, LDEO  • Others over the years

  5. E2C Participants • ES classroom teachers from NY, NJ, and elsewhere – wide range of teaching and science content experience • Teachers enrolled in ES and other programs through St. Thomas Aquinas College, Teachers College of Columbia University • Occasional visitors (HS & MS students, family members, other LDEO scientists)

  6. Workshop Format General Schedule: 08:45 – 09:30 Arrival of Participants09:00 – 09:30 General Announcements, Technology Set-up09:30 – 10:15 Background Information on Today's Topic10:30 – 12:00 Guest Scientist(s) presentation(s)12:00 – 13:00 (1 pm) Lunch with the Scientist(s) 13:00 – 15:00 (3 pm) Curriculum and Educational Technology Development Projects

  7. Selected Additional E2C PD Activities Support from NSF Geoscience Education Grant 0331232 (2004 – 2006) enabled: • Curriculum development workshops with Dr. Pearl Solomon (STAC) • 1st NYS ES Teacher Conference (2004)Focus: What Do ES Teachers Need? • 2nd NYS ES Teacher Conference (2005)Focus: Developing Curriculum Units and other web-based resources • Access to LDEO facilities and field experiences (kayaking, hiking)

  8. Other E2C web site features • Teacher-created web-site links, lesson plans, teaching tips, etc. • Student-oriented web links, ppts, etc. • Links to selected ES ed organizations • Links to National and State Science Ed Standards and related resources • Resources developed to support AMS DataStreme offerings

  9. What Have E2C Participants Given Back? • Networking support for colleagues • Eco-hikes, mini-workshops, and other programs at LDEO annual Open House • Mentoring and in-district presentations for AMS DataStreme Programs • Contributions to 2006 AGU GIFT Workshop

  10. Evaluation • Feedback from participants & E2C Team • External evaluations by Dr. J. Ebert and Dr. P. Solomon • Overwhelmingly positive about increase in content knowledge, empowerment about interactions with researchers, usefulness of web-based resources for teacher and student use, and much more

  11. Evaluation -- Weaknesses • Attending Saturday workshops in Palisades, NY • Changes in professional and personal demands over the years • Financial and institutional support • Largest question about duplicability: facilitating teacher

  12. JOI Learning “School of Rock” • Educational outreach program established by Joint Oceanographic Institutions (soon to be Consortium for Ocean Leadership) • Developer of a wide range of web-based resources for students and teachershttp://www.joiscience.org/learning • IODP Teachers-at-Sea • Coordination with other IODP educational activities (Japan, Europe, USA, elsewhere)

  13. JOI Learning Staff • Leslie Peart, Director • Sharon Katz-Cooper, Asst. Director • Lynne Pacunas, Teaching Fellow • Drs. Mark Leckie & Kristen St. John • Ann Krauss, Lisa Crowder, other IODP staff from TAMU & participating institutions • Dr. Scott Slough, evaluator

  14. School of Rock 2005

  15. JOI Learning/SOR “+ & -” • Exciting, empowering experiences for participants • Effective development and dissemination of high-quality educational materials • Interactions with IODP staff/research scientists/university educators • Drawbacks include limited spaces and time commitment during school year

  16. Examples of Other PD Programs for ES Educators • AMS Education Programs “DataStreme” • Windows to the Universe (UCAR) • NOAA and other Teacher-at-Sea programs • AGU GIFT (Geophysical Information for Teachers) • SERC Earth Exploration Toolbook • and, of course, the programs described in this Session
