Objectives of the study „Rainbow families“ • to reducelack of research concerning empirical data on the local level • to analyse the situation of the families • to look at support received by Rainbow Families and to analyze where support could be expanded • to discover potential difficulties with family policy in Cologne Office of International Affairs

Online Questionnaire • online from 17.12.2010 to 31.01.2011 • divided in: → short version with 42 questions → long version with 86 questions • after the short version each respondent had the opportunity to continue with the long version or to terminate the interview • option to leave personnel contact details if interested personal interview and/or to register for receiving the results of the study • each family was given a code Office of International Affairs

Personal Interview • Four personal semi-standardized interviews → could be adapted to the different family situations → contained 12 questions → average duration: 60 to 90 minutes → evaluation based on the tape recording and the individual notations • Interviews were made with four family types: → with a family whose children from a heterosexual past → with a family with lesbian mothers → with a family with gay fathers → with a family consisting of a lesbian mother and a gay father Office of International Affairs

Needs for Rainbow Families? • Contact person for organizations:Receiver for requests of the community, members of city consortium LGT and national organizations • Advice- / Guidepost function for lesbians, gays and transgender: Reception centre to remit consulter to the responsible departments and private bodies • Lobby of lesbians, gays and transgender in municipal bodies:e.g. city council committees, city consortium LGBT, other municipal committees

  19. Recommendations I • Protect legal equality • Improve possibilities to found a family • Sensitize city council for rainbow families • Sensitize pedagogic workers (in NGOs) • Sensitize young people and children • Sensitize the public

  20. Recommendations II • Protect and fortalize rain bow families • Support families of origin with new family systems • Expand offers for councelling, leasure activities and pedagogical support • Expand research concerning rain bow familiies
