  1. Halal & Haram • How the food is acquired (Halal = appropriate to Allah, Haram = bad such as from theft, gambling, fraud etc.) • Are the foods themselves acceptable in Islam

  2. Effects of Haram Foods • Impure food will influence us to do impure actions • Prayer will not be accepted by Allah • Allah will punish on the days of Judgement • “O ye who believe! Eat of the good things wherewith We have provided you, and render thanks to Allah if it is (indeed) He whom you worship.” (172)

  3. Halal Slaughtering • Goal is to limit the amount of pain for the animal • Jugular vein is cut and blood is drained • Hooves and horns are removed

  4. Haram foods • Pork • Animals dead prior to slaughtering • Animals not slaughtered properly • Blood and blood bi-products • Alcohol • Carnivorous animals • Birds of prey • Land animals without external ears • Vanilla • Animal shortening or lard • Gelatin • Chocolate with alcohol or vanilla

  5. Buying Halal • Look for either kosher or halal symbols
