All About Basalt This PowerPoint will tell you how basalt rocks are made, and what they are made up of. Made by Sam Videlock
What are Basalt Rocks?: Basalt rocks are an Igneous volcanic rock, that are usually black or grey. The basalt rocks are Iron rich and fine graved on the outside. These rocks start out as molten lava from a volcano and once they dry turn into the Igneous rock known as basalt. http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://z.about.com/d/geology/1/0/R/K/basalt.jpg&imgrefurl=http://geology.about.com/library/bl/images/blbasalt.htm&h=290&w=400&sz=56&hl=en&start=1&sig2=TWmyXSFnbEmQJGrWptIS1g&um=1&usg=__BHOYNupVhiv997w96CciNtAeodM=&tbnid=zgj0xHKJwfeIsM:&tbnh=90&tbnw=124&ei=t472SMSuDIe4sAPwj-m9Dg&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dbasalt%26um%3D1%26hl%3Den%26sa%3DN
What Basalt Can Look Like • Basalt rocks can look many different ways. Just by looking at these pictures you can see that Basalt can be very smooth, like the picture to the bottom right, or it can have vesicles, gas bubbles, like in the picture on the top. • Most of the Basalt rocks are grey, but some of the rocks can appear to be a greenish color, or even a reddish color. • pictures - http://www.meteorites.wustl.edu/id/lavarocks.htm
Some facts about Basalt Basalt forms widespread lava flows. (picture to the right.). The major places this occurs is Iceland, Hawaii, and the Galapagos Islands. Some Ancient basalt structureshave existed for over 50 million years. Pictures http://www.earth.ox.ac.uk/~oesis/field/medium/basalt2.jpg
How Basalt can get its Colors In the previous slides I have told you that sometimes the colors of basalt can be different, like being red, green, or even whitish. Basalt starts to look whitish in arid areas, (dry areas). Basalt looks reddish in more humid areas, although black and grey is most common. Picture – http://www.bryancater.co.uk/chippings.htm
How Basalt can feel Basalt rocks can look and feel many different ways. First, some basalt rocks can be very smooth, this occurs when water erosion takes place. Next, basalt can have a rough solid outsidelayer where the outside feels gravelly. Also, newly formed basalt can have a lot of holes in it, from when it has just cooled from magma. The picture to they right is a piece of basalt rock that is fairly smooth, but can also have the gravelly feel to it. Picture- http://geology.com/rocks/pictures/basalt.jpg
