  1. Narrative Devices Book 2, Chapter 6 By Georgina Manning

  2. Overview • In the chapter O’Brien makes contact with Winston in the hallway at the Ministry. • As Winston believes that O’Brien is part of the secret rebellion group, The Brotherhood, he takes the invitation to visit O’Brien’s home in order to acquire a new Newspeak Dictionary, as a way for O’Brien to send him information about The Brotherhood.

  3. Turning Point • ‘It had happened at last. The expected message had come. All his life, it seemed to him, he had been waiting for this to happen.’ (p164) This quote demonstrates the point in the novel where Winston receives a message from O’Brien that he believes, will lead him to the forbidden rebellion society of The Brotherhood. • ‘The first step had been a secret, involuntary thought, the second had been the opening of the diary. He had moved from thoughts to words, and now from words to actions. The last step was something that would happen in the Ministry of Love. He had accepted it. The end was contained in the beginning.’ (p166) Through this statement Winston has expressed his views that he has now accepted that he is rebelling against the government.

  4. Symbolism • ‘I was talking recently to a friend of yours who is certainly an expert. His name has slipped my memory for the moment. Again Winston’s heart stirred painfully. It was inconceivable that this was anything other than a reference to Syme’ (p164) This quote symbolizes how a person can be totally erased from society by a government like that of Big Brother. • ‘Some of the new developments are most ingenious. The reduction in the number of verbs- that is the point that will appeal to you, I think.’ (p165) This quote symbolizes how the society is cutting down words in order to have more control over how the people within the society think, unlike society today where school children are encouraged to expand their vocabulary.
