TODAY’S AGENDA 9/5 FTF Metrics in the U.S. Make a list of all the metric measurements you can find on the U.S. labels (grab a label from the white dish pans distributed around the room). TODAY IN SCIENCE CLASS FTF Begin Unit 1: Measurement Conversion War Game Announcements Happy Friday! • Homework • Metric Mania Conversion Practice • Complete Student Survey online by Friday. (link on Homework page of my website) SWBAT identify the base unit of measurement for mass, volume, density and length in the metric system.
SYSTEMS OF MEASUREMENT(HINT: USUALLY THE HEADING UP HERE MAKES A GOOD “MAIN IDEA” FOR YOUR NOTES) • There are multiple units of measurement • In the U.S. we use the English System or Customary System • Most of the world uses the Metric System Can you think of the units we use in the U.S. to measure • Liquid • Mass • Length • Temperature • Time • Write them on your whiteboard
METRIC SYSTEM(HINT: USUALLY THE HEADING UP HERE MAKES A GOOD “MAIN IDEA” FOR YOUR NOTES • The metric system is a system of measurement that is used by scientists all over the world. • In the science world it is also called it “System International” or SI. Can you think of the metric units used to measure • Liquid • Mass • Length • Temperature • Time • Write them on the white board!
METRIC BASE UNITS • Liquid = Liters • Mass = Gram • Length = Meters • Temperature = Celsius • Time = Seconds
LENGTH • The distance between two points. • Base unit is the meter (abbreviated with a lowercase m)
MASS • The measure of the amount of matter an object contains • Matter: The material that all objects and substances are made up of • Anything that has mass and takes up space is matter • Base unit of mass is the gram (abbreviate with a lowercase g)
VOLUME • The amount of space an object takes up. • Measure in L (liters) for liquid. • Measured in cm3 for solids
DENSITY • The measure of mass per given volume. • d = m / v
TODAY’S AGENDA 9/8 FTF 1. In your notebook list the base unit for mass, volume, length. Include the abbreviation. 2. What “hint” can you use to remember the formula for density? TODAY IN SCIENCE CLASS FTF Begin Unit 1: Measurement Conversion War Game Announcements Conversion Quiz Thursday! • Homework • Metric Mania Conversion Practice SWBAT correctly convert between metric measurements by converting to 3 larger units and 3 smaller units.
METRIC PREFIXES • Prefixes are added to metric units to indicate smaller or larger units of measurement. • Units larger than the base unit are kilo, deca and hecto • Units smaller than the base unit are deci, centi and milli. • Prefixes also have abbreviations.

CONVERTING USING MULTIPLICATION OR DIVISION • Metric prefixes are based on 10. • Each prefix is 10 times greater or 10 times less than the prefix on either side. • To convert using multiplication or division: • Determine starting prefix. • Figure out how many times greater or smaller the prefix is that you are converting to. • Multiple or divide depending on if you are converting to a larger prefix or smaller prefix.
REMEMBER!DO A REALITY CHECK AFTER A CONVERSION • If you are converting from a large unit to a smaller unit your answer should be a larger number than the original measurement. • Example: kilometer to meter • .05 km = 50m • 10 km = 10 000m • If you are converting from a small unit to a large unit, your answer should be a smaller number than the original measurement. • Example: mL to L • 5 000mL = 5 L • .15 L = 150 kL
LET’S PRACTICE • How many milliliters are in 1 liter? • Ask: home many times bigger/smaller is a milliliter compared to a liter. • Decide: will I multiply or divide my starting number? • Do the math. • Convert 360 cm to dkm • Convert .06km to m
TICKET OUT! • 5 500 km = ______________ m ? • .05 g = ________________ kg? • 5000 mL = ____________ L?
