  2. The American Spirit • Objective- Learn about the American Spirit and identify this idea in poetry. • Learn to analyze tone in poetry. • Warm-up- Read “I Hear America Singing” • The American Spirit • HW- “I Hear American Singing” Modern Day Poem

  3. Reading Day- Vocabulary • Objective- Learn vocabulary from the text and understand words in context and through the use of a dictionary. • Warm-up- ACT Grammar • 10 Words from Text and Definitions • Reading Day on your class books • HW- 10 Words, if not finished • Continue Reading

  4. Style, Voice, Diction and Syntax • Objective- Learn to analyze style, tone, diction and sentence structure of individual authors. • Warm-up- Read “Success is Counted Sweetest” by Emily Dickinson • HW- Read non-fiction articles about Walt Whitman and Abraham Lincoln

  5. Reading Day- Inferences • Objective- Practice making inferences, looking for subtle details into character relationships. • Warm-up- ACT Grammar • Reading Time • HW- Work on Essay over The American Spirit

  6. ACT- Computer Lab • Objective- Prepare for the ACT using an online preparation tool. • Warm-up- ACT Grammar • Computer Lab

  7. Foundational American Works • Objective- Learn elements of foundational American works, including literature of the Civil War Time Period. • Learn to analyze how the author incorporates many elements into a text. • Warm-up- Have your articles about Abraham Lincoln and Walt Whitman out. Read the given timeline, and on the back of the inaugural address, complete the task. • Gettysburg Address • The Emancipation Proclamation • HW- Read “O Captain, My Captain” analyzing the text for tone, style, diction and sentence structures.

Reading Day- Textual Support • Objective- Learn to use textual support to address both what is explicitly stated and what can be inferred from the text. • Warm-up- Get kindle/book for reading day • Textual support for presentation • HW- Read given articles about women’s literature and use the previous reading strategy to analyze how the text says it.

  9. Mark Twain • Objective- Learn about Mark Twain’s writing, specifically his epigrams. • Compare and contrast Mark Twain’s epigrams with Benjamin Franklin’s epigrams. • Read informational texts • Analyze aphorisms vs epigrams • HW- paragraph analyzing the two, if not finished. • Also, watch the video on passive and active voice.

Civil War and War Literature • Objective- Learn about literature specific to the civil war time period, as well as literature that focuses on war, comparing and contrasting the two. • Learn how to analyze author’s choice of genre and its impact on both form and meaning. • Warm-up- Read “The Gettysburg Address” and “The Emancipation Proclamation” starting on pg 562 using the bookmark reading strategy. • Jigsaw Readings • Read “Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl” by Harriet Jacobs and “Go Down Moses” • Read “Why Soldiers Won’t Talk” by John Steinbeck and “The Death of the Ball Turret Gunner” by Randall Jarrell • HW- Women’s Literature articles- Using same reading strategy

Poetry and The American Spirit • Objective- Practice analyzing poetry for style, tone, diction and syntax • Learn the importance of using vivid verbs. • Read informational text to analyze individual authors’ narrative elements. • Warm-up- Read “I, Too Sing America” by Julia Alvarez and identify style, tone, diction and syntax. • Read “What’s American about American Poetry” by Billy Collins • HW- Book Readings Due Friday • American Spirit Essay Due Next Friday- Thursday for 7th hr.

Work on Presentations/Review for Test • Objective- Practice literary analysis of a complex text. • Incorporate a thesis statement, inferences, textual support into a group presentation. • Review for Unit 4 Test • Warm-up- Take out your quotations and inferences from the text and use them to write a thesis statement for your presentation. • Group Time • Review Sheet for Test • HW- Unit 4 Test Tomorrow • Unit 4 Review Sheet
