What is a thesis statement? • A thesis statement states the main idea of a piece of writing. • It functions as a promise to the reader of what the rest of the piece will be about. • It usually comes at the beginning of the piece. • Your original thesis is a working thesis, meaning it can change as your draft changes.
Thesis Statements Continued… • A successful working thesis has three characteristics: • It is potentially interesting to the intended audience. • It is as specific as possible. • It limits the topic enough to make it manageable. A thesis statement consists of two parts: a topic part, which states the topic, and a comment part, which makes an important point about the topic. Is your thesis statement specific and clear? Describe your topic and make a comment on it. Have you made a claim instead of just stating the facts? Will it be interesting to your audience?
Group Work Create an audience statement for your article. Create a purpose statement for your article. Create a thesis statement for a rhetorical analysis for this article. • Your Thesis Statement should have: • Article title • Article author • Purpose • Audience • Three rhetorical choices *must be in the last sentence
