  3. The Furies • mortals defenseless against Greek Furies • three evil Furies with killing mission • Furies would punish all crime • never stopped following criminals • snakes for hair, blood dripping eyes • let loose by Greek gods • furious and infuriated

  4. The Fates • 3 sisters born Zeus and Themis • Clotho, "the spinner“ spins thread life, control hour birth • Lachesis, "the apportioner", measures thread, spins events human lives; • Atropos "the inevitable", decides moment death, cuts thread life .

Myth of the overthrow of Cronos • Cronus ruling power castrating Father Uranus. • wife Rhea offspring first Olympians • insure safety Cronus ate children • worked Rhea unhappy loss of children • tricked Cronus *rock, zeus* • Zeus revolt Titans, defeated, banished underworld • Cronus escaped Italy ruled as Saturn • rule was golden age earth • honored by the Saturnalia feast.

  8. Apollo • “most Greek of all the Gods.“ • Archer-god, Healer, God Light, God Truth • dolphin and crow sacred and more • illegitimate son Zeus, twin sister, Artemis • Many lovers and children • First God fell love w/same sex • interest in music, healer • God of truth and prophecy

  9. Athena • Athene -Goddess of War and Wisdom. • Gray-eyed- word often used describe Athene. • Athene's tree she created, is olive • Athene's bird is the owl. • Athene's Roman name is Minerva. • Lovers & Children • The Great Inventor • Mortal Weakness
