  1. LIBR 220 – Final Project – Mapping My Vacations Kati Hirigoyen Fall 2008

  2. San José State University - SLIS This project was completed for a course on Maps, GIS, and Map Librarianship taken in Fall 2008 through the SJSU School of Library and Information Science, http://slisweb.sjsu.edu/. I used my past travels as a way to investigate the variety and location of maps and map related resources online. You may follow along on my journey…

  3. 1985 – Minnesota and Missouri When I was three, my family and I flew out to Missouri and drove to Minnesota, to visit relatives. My great-aunt lived on the family farm in St. Joe, Missouri. My aunt, uncle, and cousins lived in St. Paul. Map 1: “Upper Mid-West US.”  2008.  National Atlas.

  4. 1985 – Minnesota and Missouri Here is a map of the urban area around St. Joseph, Missouri. As you can see, there is a lot of farmland. My aunt had pigs and piglets, but I was too shy to touch them. Map 2: “St. Joseph, Missouri.”  2008.  National Atlas. Map 3: “St. Joseph, Missouri.”  2008.  Google Maps.

  5. 1986 – Wyoming: Yellowstone and the Grand Teton When I was four, we took a camping trip across to Wyoming and Yellowstone and the Grand Teton. I remember seeing Old Faithful and thinking how funny it smelled! That smell was natural sulfur. Map 4: “National Parks of Wyoming."  Date Unknown. National Park Service.

  6. 1986 – Wyoming: Yellowstone and the Grand Teton… and on to Seattle/Victoria After visiting Wyoming, we drove across to Seattle, and took the Ferry across to Victoria, B.C., Canada. Unfortunately, the only part of this that I remember was the ferry ride across, candy in the snack bar, and getting our currency exchanged. Map 5: “Puget Sound."  Date Unknown.  Victoria BC Ferry Guide.

  7. 1989 – Colorado, New Mexico In 1989, we went on another camping trip across the West, going to Colorado and New Mexico. We stayed at a beautiful campground near the Carlsbad Caverns. The caverns were impressive and bats came out at night! It was great. Map 6: “West U.S."  2008.  National Atlas.

  8. 1989 – Colorado, New Mexico Here is an interesting map that shows where there is the most percentage of Federal Land. In the states of the West? Map 7: “Who Owns The West?"  2004.  Image courtesy of Strange Maps.

  9. 1991 – Louisiana and Florida When I was 9, we flew out to Louisiana and saw New Orleans. It was gorgeous, and unlike any city I’ve seen in my life. It makes quite an impression on a nine-year-old! We rode the trolley, stayed in the French Quarter, ate beignets, red beans and rice. Map 8: “French Quarter, New Orleans, LA."  2002.  At New Orleans Website. Map 9: “United States of Obesity."  2008.  Courtesy CalorieLab and CDC via Strange Maps.

  10. 1991 – Louisiana and Florida After our time in Louisiana, we drove to Sanibel Island, which is in Florida. We were visiting our aunt who had moved to Florida from the family farm in St. Joe. I loved Florida! We also visited Cape Canaveral, where I saw an alligator in a swamp on the side of the road! Map 10: “Range of the American Alligator."  2004.  Courtesy National Parks via Wikipedia.

  11. 1994 – Road Trip to Minnesota When I was 12, we took a trailer camper across to visit our cousins again in Minnesota. We went across 80 on the way there, and up another way on the way back. We stayed at a lot of KOAs. Map 11: “KOA Locations Between Fremont, CA., and St. Paul, MN."  2008.  MapQuest via KOA. Map 12: “Triptych of Round Trip Between Fremont, CA., and St. Paul, MN."  2008.  Google Maps.

  12. 1994 – Road Trip to Minnesota My brother and I thought it was funny that our cousins said “pop” when they wanted to order a soda. We would laugh and say, “No, you mean SODA!” And they would say, “Why do you guys call POP ‘soda’?” Map 13: “Generic Names for Soft Drinks, by County."  2003.  Department of Cartography and Geography, East Central University (Oklahoma), via Pop vs. Soda.

  13. 1998 – Washington D.C. When I was 16, my dad worked for United Airlines, so we flew to Washington, D.C., to visit monuments and relatives. It was very interesting to see our nation’s history like that, but it was also hot and extremely muggy. Map 15: “National Mall, Washington, D.C."  Date Unknown.  Washington, D.C., Districts and Landmarks. Map 14: “Washington D.C. National Mall Map."  National Parks via Vacation Ideas Guide.

  14. 1998 – Washington D.C…. And Virginia and Maryland We drove to Virginia to visit my dad’s aunt and uncle, and also visited Baltimore and the Inner Harbor. I didn’t particularly like the city of Baltimore, but thought that the Inner Harbor was beautiful. Map 16: “Baltimore Inner Harbor."  2003.  South Baltimore Website.

  15. 2000 – Oregon and Trinity Alps The summer after I graduated high school, we drove up to visit my maternal grandpa in Oregon. On the way back, we camped in the Trinity Alps. They were gorgeous and unforgettable. The lady in the campground next to us swore that “something” got to her donuts they brought! Possibly Bigfoot?? Map 17: “Bigfoot Sightings, by County."  2001.  Bigfoot Field Researchers Organization.

  16. 2003 – Minnesota: St. Paul and Duluth After I graduated college, my brother and I flew out to visit our cousins, aunt, and uncle in St. Paul, Minnesota. We also drove up to Duluth to watch my cousin run Grandma’s Marathon, and to see the Great Lakes Aquarium, which is the largest freshwater aquarium in the world. Map 18: “Upper Mid-West U.S."  2008.  National Atlas.

  17. 2005 – Arizona: Phoenix and Flagstaff… In 2005, my friends and I flew out to Arizona to see Spring Training. We are Oakland A’s fans, but couldn’t resist visiting so many other stadiums. We saw the Cubs, Angels, Brewers, Mariners, Royals, and Padres. We met people from all over the country! Map 19: “Cactus League Overview."  2008.  ESPN Sports Travel Spring Training Guide.

  18. 2005 – Arizona: Phoenix and Flagstaff… and the Grand Canyon After Spring Training, we drove up to Flagstaff to visit the Grand Canyon. No picture does the Grand Canyon justice. You just have to see it for yourself. Map 20: “Grand Canyon South Rim."  Date Unknown. US National Parks Website. Map 21: “Geologic Map of Grand Canyon’s South Rim."  2000.  USGS Website.

  19. 2007 – New Jersey and New York… And Pennsylvania, too In 2007, I worked for Johnson & Johnson, and we did a lot of business with our colleagues in New Jersey. I visited New Jersey three times. My New Jersey colleague took my coworker/friend and I to dinner in Pennsylvania. I thought that was cool! We visited two sites in Jersey. One was near where Washington crossed the Delaware. Map 22: “New Jersey Invites You, Come and See it All."  1955.  Courtesy RU Special Collections (Rutgers University), via Strange Maps Website.

  20. 2007 – New Jersey and New York… And Pennsylvania, too When I visited New Jersey on my own in the springtime, I wandered to Morristown, NJ, on the way to the hotel from the airport. I just followed the signs and found a colonial landmark! Map 23: “Morristown National Historical Park Map."  Date Unknown.  National Park Service.

  21. 2007 – New Jersey and New York… And Pennsylvania, too My friend and I figured, since we were there for the weekend, why not visit New York? We squeezed as much New York into 12 hours as possible. We rode the Subway, with which I was very impressed. Map 24: “Manhattan Landmarks."  Date Unknown. Courtesy Tales of Homeward Blog. Map 25: “Manhattan Subway Map."  Date Unknown.  Courtesy Reed College Website.

  22. 2008 – Oregon, Washington, and Victoria, B.C. This past summer, I visited my now ex-coworker who moved with her husband to Victoria, B.C., Canada. On my way there, I visited my grandpa and step-grandma in Oregon. Funny story, my itinerary had me fly up to Portland, then down to Medford. My flight out of Medford was delayed, so I missed the B.C. Ferry. I took a Seaplane from Seattle to Victoria. It was beautiful and green everywhere. Map 26: “Pacific Northwest U.S."  2008.  National Atlas.

  23. 2008 – Oregon, Washington, and Victoria, B.C. I rode the Victoria Harbour Ferry around Victoria’s Inner Harbour. My friend and I took it to tea at the Point Ellice House. I took the B.C. Ferry back to Seattle at the end of the week. Map 5: “Puget Sound."  Date Unknown.  Victoria BC Ferry Guide.

  24. What’s Next? Maps and GIS seem to be unsung heroes of the modern world! Maps have been useful to see where I have been and how I got there. Likewise, maps can show you the same and who knows what the future will bring! Spend some time with a map librarian and learn to find your way with USGS Maps, NASA satellite images, Google Earth, and more…
