Course Objective The objective of 9 H English is to prepare students for the rigors of AP classes, college admittance examinations, and college itself. Ninth grade teachers continuously work in conjunction with each other and with all teachers of advanced English classes to ensure the skills, assessments, and rubrics are aligned with the overall goals of the program. Specific Focus and Student Outcomes • Analysis of Canonical and Contemporary Fiction and Nonfiction • Edith Hamilton’s Mythology • Anansi Boys by Neil Gaiman • The Joy Luck Club by Amy Tan • Animal Farm by George Orwell • Great Expectations by Charles Dickens • Night by Elie Wiesel • In Cold Blood by Truman Capote • Oedipus and Antigone by Sophocles* • Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare • Various short stories and nonfiction articles
Specific Focus & Student Outcomes (continued) • Basic grammar rules and mechanics • Proper utilization of vocabulary (context clues, etc.) • Development of analytical writing skills • Critical reading and analysis skills
