Secondary Particles Energy/Power Deposition in the LHC Insertion : status Tracking FLUKA Energy Deposition After the Monday morning meeting and discussions with J.P. Koutchouk, W. Scandale, A. Comment about the work done so far • Standard layout LHC Vers 6.5 has higher values of power deposed in the quads, respect to the “academic” reference case studied before • Need of taking into account all the engineering details (BEAM SCREEN) NED Steering Commitee meeting CERN - 23 February 2006
Beam Screen as in IP5 (Horizontal crossing angle) (top/bottom cooling pipes) NED Steering Commitee meeting CERN - 23 February 2006
Parameters • Check the biasing and cut-off in the new defined regions (Beam Screen) • The beam screen is present all along the beam pipe not only under the quads !!!! Approximate results (trend) • No Q01 trim quad • Different beam pipe aperture • Beam pipe horizontal aperture when beam screens are considered NED Steering Commitee meeting CERN - 23 February 2006 In the column labelled as “distance from I.P.” is reported the distance of the end of the element from the interaction point. (ITC is for Internal Triplet Corrector). In the column labelled as “distance from I.P.” is reported the distance of the end of the element from the interaction point. Thermal scaling NED Steering Commitee meeting CERN - 23 February 2006
Thermal scaling Thermal analysis will confirm (!!) or not the linear scaling If linear scaling is valid a careful check of the calculation and actions should be taken NED Steering Commitee meeting CERN - 23 February 2006
Conclusions • The “official” layout Vers. 6.5 seems worst than the old reference case • Beam screen action must be taken into account (check the last run) • Thermal analysis will complete the study and validate (?) the linear scaling (hope in order to save time and calculations, conversely it can save the quads) • New layouts by moving the IR toward or far from the IP (according to the beam dynamics) will give godd indications about an “easy way” to get some L increase NED Steering Commitee meeting CERN - 23 February 2006
