Duerr, Nancy Hoebelheinrich, Carol Meyer, Erin Robinson The ESIP Federation seeks to share the community's knowledge with scientists who increasingly need to be better data managers, as well as to support workforce development for new data management professionals. Course Materials Training Modules Workshops Initial Objective Objective Module Publication Status • Begin the process of data management knowledge sharing by conducting workshops for scientists as opportunities present themselves • Workshops held: • Dec. 2010, Fall AGU – Writing Your Data Management Plan • Nov. 2011, Association of Polar Early Career Scientists (APECS) – Responsible Data Use and Local Data Management • Dec. 2011, Fall AGU – Data Management 101 for the Earth Scientist • Jan. 2012, AMS Workshop – Primer on Data Management • April 2012, APECS/IPY conference workshop • May 2012, DataOne Data Management training workshop • May 2012, NOAA Environmental Data Management Conference – Data Citations, NOAA Data Management Plans • Develop a series of very short, single topic training modules aimed at scientists (and budding data managers)organized around the following major themes: • The Case for Data Stewardship • Data Management Planning • Local Data Management • Preservation Strategies • Responsible Data Use • 53 modules have been drafted – More authors needed !!!! • Over 70 module reviews have been received • First batch of 8 modules are in rewrite, then record status • First webinar and module has been published to the ESIP Commons • Module authors are volunteers from the ESIP community • Each module undergoes a peer-review process with at least two reviewers • Upon acceptance for publication, module authors are invited to record their modules • These recordings form the basis of a script used to prepare presentation notes and the final recording • Modules are published on the ESIP Commons and given a DOI, Version, and Publication Date • Published modules are provided as: • An annotated powerpoint presentation • A short webinar complete with professionally recorded audio Publication Process Next steps • Complete publication of the remaining modules over the next month or two • Encourage the community to use the modules (ppt or videos)! Longer term goals • Over the next several years, the ESIP Federation expects to evolve training courses which seeks to improve the understanding of scientific data management among scientists, emerging scientists, and data professionals of all sorts • To contribute to these plans, visit the Data Stewardship Committee planning session this Friday morning!
