Alton originated as a stop on the San Benito and Rio Grande Valley Railway in 1911 Founded by citizens of Alton, Illinois and named by railroad officials after the Alton Railroad 1920s, the Alton School District was formed and later consolidated with the Mission School District Water District No. 7 was formed in the 1930s to serve Alton San Martín de Porres Catholic Church, originally a mission, was constructed in 1967 and declared a parish in 1969 Community voted to incorporate on April 10, 1978 Voted for a Home Rule Charter in the May election of 2006 History of Alton Tradition 2
