Story as Journey Warm Up Objective I can use vivid, sensory details to write either a fictional or personal piece that demonstrates a character changing as a result of conflict (minor or major). • Why should we be capable of changing? What’s the benefit of being dynamic, rather than stagnant?
From Janet Burroway • “When worlds (cultures, generations, genders, ‘hoods) encounter each other, conflict will inevitably occur. When conflict occurs, human beings will band together in some form of love. Sometimes allies, families, races, gangs, nations, will draw closer together to repel a common antagonist. Sometimes connection will be made across the divide of self and other” (p. 168).
Why Change Occurs • What a character thinks, believes, assumes faces a challenge (in the form of a character, contrary circumstances, etc.).
Example of a Short-Short Story about a Long Journey from “Frontiers” by John M. Daniel I’ve never been this far from home. I’ve never stayed up this late. I’m out west. We rode the train. I slept upstairs. You put your clothes in a hammock. They have Dixie cups. The world has mountains on the edge, where the sun sets, big black things, and that’s where we’re going. I’m in the front seat with my mother. I’m five. We’re going to a dude ranch. There will be cowboys. There’s a soft green glow on the dash board. My mother wears perfume. I’m traveling. I’ve never been this old. “The stars are ablaze,” I tell my mother.
Try This 6.1 • Option A: Write a 1-2 page memoir or short story about a journey. Give us the setting and at least 2 characters. They discover something that causes trouble. Let the main character make a decision and take action. • Option B: Write about a time that you started out on a trip but failed to arrive at your destination. What was the obstacle—weather, accident, mechanical failure, human failure or conflict? Characterize both the people involved and the setting through significant detail; give us a sense of the trip itself. What changed from the beginning expectations? How did you change?
