Vocabulary • Percent:A ratio whose denominator is 100 • Proportion:An equation starting that two ratios are equivalent. • Decimal: a number written using the base ten place value system where a decimal point separates the ones’ and tenths’ digits. • Percentequation: You can represent ‘a is p percent of b’ with the equation where a is part of the base b and p% is percent.

  4. Understanding Percent’s • The square has 16 out of 100 squares shaded. You can say that 16 percent of the squares are shaded. • Numbers: you can write 16 percent 16/100 or as 16%. • Algebra: you can write p percent as p/100 or as p%. • SOLVINGPERCENTPROBLEMS: You can represent “ a is p of b “ with proportion a/b=P/100 where a is part of the base b and p% or p/100 is the percent.

  5. Examples for doing percent's and fractions • Common percent's that you should know. For EX: 48%= you move the decimal two spaces to the left and its going to equal the same thing only in decimal 0.48 • Example 1:your class has raised 80% of its goal of $8000 for a trip to Washington, D.C. How much money has your class raised? • Solve: a= p% b write percent equation. • =80%x8000 substitute 80 for p and 8000 for b. • =0.8x8000 write percent as a decimal. • =6400 multiply.

  6. where or what job uses percent's? • Sales disturbers –They use percent's to mark clothes and other items. • Insurance –They use percent's for discounts. • Retailers- They use presents for mark ups and sales. • Teachers – teachers use percent for grading and different documents.
