  2. Christian ethics Christian ethics are based on Gospel teachings but focus on to key relationships: • Right relationship with God • Right relationship with others These two relationships are guided by appropriate actions to maintain and support positive and healthy interaction.

  3. The Ten Commandments Christians recognise the Ten Commandments as a set of principles guiding ethical behaviour The Ten Commandments (the Decalogue) were a covenant (fancy word for agreement) between God and his people. They were given to Moses and the Israelites when they were in the desert searching for the Promised land (Exodus 20:2-14). The first four commandments describe ones relationship with God, the other six are about maintaining good relationships with our neighbour.

The Ten Commandments 6 ‘I am the Lord your God who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of [e]slavery. 7 ‘You shall have no other gods [f]before Me. 8 ‘You shall not make for yourself [g]an idol, or any likeness of what is in heaven above [h]or on the earth beneath [i]or in the water under the earth. 9 You shall not worship them or serve them; for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children, and on the third and the fourth generations of those who hate Me, 10 but showing loving-kindness to thousands, to those who love Me and keep My commandments. 11 ‘You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not [j]leave him unpunished who takes His name in vain.

  6. 12‘Observe the Sabbath day to keep it holy, as the Lord your God commanded you. 13 Six days you shall labor and do all your work, 14 but the seventh day is a Sabbath of the Lord your God; in it you shall not do any work, you or your son or your daughter or your male servant or your female servant or your ox or your donkey or any of your cattle or your sojourner who [k]stays with you, so that your male servant and your female servant may rest as well as you. 15 You shall remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt, and the Lord your God brought you out of there by a mighty hand and by an outstretched arm; therefore the Lord your God commanded you to observe the Sabbath day. 16 ‘Honor your father and your mother, as the Lord your God has commanded you, that your days may be prolonged and that it may go well with you on the land which the Lord your God gives you. 17 ‘You shall not murder. 18 ‘You shall not commit adultery. 19 ‘You shall not steal. 20 ‘You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor. 21 ‘You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, and you shall not desire your neighbor’s house, his field or his male servant or his female servant, his ox or his donkey or anything that belongs to your neighbor.

  7. The Ten Commandments • See Exodus 20:1-17 and Deuteronomy 5 Draw up a table outlining each commandment in one column, and in the other column give a modern day translation – for example..

  8. The Beatitudes In Christianity, the Beatitudes refer to a set of teachings by Jesus that appear in the gospels of Matthew and Luke. They each are a proclamation without a narrative. The word beatitude is Latin stemming from the term beatismeaning happy, joyful. The word blessed in the Beatitudes is said to refer to "exclamation of the inner joy and peace that comes with being right with God”, Each Beatitude consists of two phrases: the condition and the result. In almost all cases the phrases used are familiar from an Old Testament context, but in the Sermon Jesus elevates them to new teachings. Together, the Beatitudes present a new set of Christian ideals that focus on love and humility rather than force. They echo the highest ideals of the teachings of Jesus on mercy, spirituality and

  9. Matt 5:1-12. The Beatitudes He said: 3 “Blessed are the poor in spirit,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 4 Blessed are those who mourn,
for they will be comforted. 5 Blessed are the meek,
for they will inherit the earth. 6 Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness,
for they will be filled. 7 Blessed are the merciful,
for they will be shown mercy. 8Blessed are the pure in heart,
for they will see God. 9 Blessed are the peacemakers,
for they will be called children of God. 10 Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 11 “Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. 12Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

  10. Jesus command to love – John 13:34-35. 34“A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. 35 By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” How does Jesus command to love link to the principle beliefs of Christianity? How does this influence Christianity's’ ethical teachings?
