Program Overview • One year service-learning experience • Young adults between 19-29 years of age • Opportunity to serve in ten countries around the world • Variety of placements and assignments such as: working with the elderly community development teaching campus ministry music ministries advocacy social justice working with the homeless human rights youth ministry health awareness/education YAGM

  4. 2011-2012 Country Programs • Argentina & Uruguay • Central Europe (Hungary & Slovakia) • Jerusalem/West Bank • Madagascar • Malaysia • Mexico • Southern Africa • United Kingdom YAGM

  5. Program Concept • Accompaniment: walking together in solidarity that practices interdependence and mutuality GOD´S STORY Meet people where they are, overlapping your story and my story within God’s story My Story Your Story YAGM

  6. Program Logistics • Placements: vary per country and per community • Housing: host families, shared flat, private flat • Stipend: per month to cover base living expenses • Insurance: option to be covered under ELCA policy • Student loans: option to defer YAGM

  7. Program Requirements • Age: between 19 – 29 years of age • ELCA Connection: • Congregational membership • Attendance at an ELCA affiliated college or university • Participation in Lutheran Campus Ministry • Service at a Lutheran summer camp or outdoor ministry • Language: mandatory for some programs; helpful but not necessary for most YAGM

Program Cost • ELCA contributes 70% of the cost of service per volunteer • Fundraising expectation of $4,000 per volunteer • Friends, family, co-workers, congregations, synods • Scholarship support available More than just money… fundraising is the foundation for a strong network of support throughout the year of service YAGM

Program Purpose • Utilize relationship building and service to enhance cross-cultural skills • Develop servant-leaders for the church • Provide challenging & engaging opportunities that result in globally formed and globally informed young adults • Allow young adults to grow in faithand better understand their place in God’s world • Share the stories of the global church and community YAGM

Program Timeline • March 1 2012: Applications due (priority consideration to applications received by February 15) www.elca.org/yagm • Early March 2012: Phone call from YAGM alumni and GM staff • Late March 2012: Invitation to participate in the program • April 2012: DIP Event (Discernment-Interview-Placement) • April-August 2012: Raise personal, spiritual and financial support • Late August 2012: Young Adult Orientation in Chicago • Late August/ Early September 2012: Depart for country of service with group • Year of service, returning to USA July/August 2013 • Re-Entry Retreat October 2013 YAGM

  12. Give God a Chance • University • Work • ……….Then what? “It was not until I moved to Portland that I really understood that a life of faith is not one of passive indifference but a call to love, serve, and share the Gospel.” YAGM

  13. Sawubona! (Hello!) • Placement Site: Carolina, South Africa • The Mnisi Family • Evangelical Lutheran Church of Southern Africa • South Africa, Swaziland, Lesotho, Botswana • Church office, primary school, garden, design, tutoring YAGM

Learning to ‘Be’ • Encountered: • racism, HIV and AIDS, poverty, social injustice and inequality • cultural and traditional practices different from my own • personal challenges: what was I supposed to be ‘doing’? • Informal ministry • Part of a global family and church community • Authentic experience YAGM

  15. Part of the Family • Move to Mbabane, Swaziland • New country, new culture… same family, same faith • Lutheran Development Service • Fellow YAGM volunteers, in-country support system Ubuntu is an African concept that roughly translated, means “I am because we are” YAGM

Khanyisile Mnisi • ‘One who brings the light’ • Excited and hopeful for the future, grateful for the past • Open to God’s call in my life, and feel liberated that I am able to trust in His plan, even if I don’t know what it is • More aware of the global community, and looking forward to encouraging others to get involved, in any way, in the world in which we live YAGM

  17. Next Steps • University • Work • YAGM • ……….Now what? • Aware of the global community, believe in the power of relationships, have a stronger faith, and a willingness to share that faith and invest in those relationships with others. YAGM
