Cameroon 2007 - 2009 Community impact Providing clean water access to: Residents of Kob and Tudig villages Kob Integrated Health Center, a newly constructed clinic serving a population of 5,000. Kob Presbyterian Church Nursery school with 30 students Kob, Cameroon
Where are we now? • Gundom, Cameroon Water Project • Village of 200+ that lack access to clean water • Women and Children travel up to an hour to collect water every day • Decreased ability to be involved in social and economic activities • Gravity Fed System • Protect the spring sources, layout pipes at critical sections along the pipeline, begin the construction of collection, distribution storage, and break pressure tanks. Possibility of Rainwater Harvesting Systems • Implement health education program to promote safe hygiene practices and proper use of water. • Ensuring Sustainability, Impact, and Innovation

Timeline for Project Pre-assessment Phase: Fall ‘08 Assessment Trip: Jan ‘09 Design Phase: Jan ’09-May’09 Implementation: May 19th – June 7th Post Implementation: At least a two year commitment towards this village Gundom, Cameroon
Involvement Gundom - Purchase Spring - Pay for survey - Lay pipeline - Needs Assessment -Spring Protection - Project ID - Follow-up -Piping & Surveying PennEWB -Distribution Tank MQLIF (NGO) - Confirm Elevation - Technical Design -Prepare Application - Fundraising - Funds - Remote Planning
Ensuring Sustainability • Post-implementation trip • Address unforeseen complications from long-term use • Maintain strong relations with NGO for follow up • Impact Assessments • Leave behind knowledge • Ensure that there is someone who can maintain any system that is in place • Community Education • Healthy living practices, focus groups, and skits
Ensuring Impact • Post-implementation trip • System will result in decreased time spent seeking water, decreased time lost due to waterborne diseases, and an increased involvement in economic activities • System will increase the availability of potable water, which may reduce the incidence of waterborne diseases, reduce the burden on women and children to collect water
Ensuring Innovation • Focus on all aspects of a community • Quality of living is a function of multiple factors • Economic Activities: Instituting a plan for micro-enterprise • Health Impact: Collaborating with Penn MPH for a quantitative outcomes measurement program • Social Impact: Residents of Gundom will find an increase in time for productive activities. An increase in the quality of life. • Technological Innovation • Applying our engineering skill sets to solve problems abroad • Adapting the project to ecological and geographic conditions • Prospect for future innovation based on past projects • Continuing a global engagement process
