Facts that tell a story • Because of the Civil War, modern embalming is invented • 2% of the American population would be die in the Civil War • That’s like wiping the Highlands off the Denver map • Or, over 6 million Americans today • Bloodiest war in American history • African Americans made up <1% of the northern population • By the war’s end made up 10% of the Union Army. • A total of 180,000 black men, more than 85% of those eligible, enlisted. • • At Cold Harbor, Va., 7,000 Americans fell in 20 minutes.
Background • After the election of Lincoln Southern states start to secede (leave) the Union • Call themselves the Confederate States of America • By the time Lincoln is sworn in 7 states had seceded • Confederacy attack on Ft. Sumter in S. C. causes 4 more states to secede • Virginia was important • 4 Slave states stay loyal. Why? • Both sides gear up for what they think will be a short war

Confederate Advantages/Disadvantages Advantages Disadvantages • Reason to fight: they saw it as a 2nd Revolution • Excellent leadership: Robert E. Lee, James Longstreet, Stonewall Jackson • Knew the territory • Almost no navy • Poorly supplied • Very few factories/resources
