  1. National Park Service U.S. Department of the Interior Inventory & Monitoring Program Natural Resource Information Portal nrinfo.nps.gov Margaret Beer, I&M Data Manager 2011 George Wright Society Meeting, March 17, 2011

  2. National Park Service U.S. Department of the Interior Natural Resource Program Center • October, 2006 - NRPC • Data Management Policy • “…NRPC will create a central web portal, a single sign-on system, and develop a common user interface for all natural resource applications…” • “ NRPC will integrate all applications, eliminate redundant data storage, and streamline standard functions...” • “ NRPC systems will transition to Service Oriented Architecture (SOA). This transition will strategically position NRPC to better deal with future changes in technology…”

  3. nrinfo.nps.gov

  4. NRInfo Portal Essentials • Authentication: system knows who you are and what you can do, without usernames and passwords • Standardized look, feel, navigation throughout • Managed Access: NPS and public • Sensitivity, Proprietary status, Quality assessment: managed at the record level • The portal isn’t the only way to reach the underlying data

  5. NRInfo Portal Essentials • User Requirements: hundreds of users and potential users interviewed during development process • Iterative Development: Short development cycles; functionality added or improved with each cycle • Performance: will be getting better! • Much to improve.

  6. NRInfo Portal – on deck • Public Use Statistics: work will begin this year to integrate application into the portal • Inventory Tracking: Integration by the end of the fiscal year • T&E species, RPRS, APCAM: currently being considered for conversion and integration • Geospatial capabilities: expanding with each release

  7. NRInfo Steering Committees • Reference • NPSpecies • Portal

  8. Portal Steering Committee • Overall portal functionality, look, feel, navigation, layout

  9. Portal Steering Committee – other ideas • one tab called “search” • bring back the name “data store” • tabs based on function, not subject • specific searches or ways to retrieve “authoritative” data sets • “human use” tab is confusing to cultural staff • look at Google’s use of links in upper-left corner of its home page • look at Databasin.org website • etc.

  10. Nrinfo Search Make NRInfo my home page

  11. We need your ideas, suggestions, gripes, concerns, requests. Nrinfo_feedback@nps.gov Or Brent Frakes, Alison Loar, Kathy Dratch, Margaret Beer, Peter Budde
