  1. The Rise of Hitler in Germany • Born 1889: Austria • Came from an abusive alcoholic father, lost brother and sister. • Dropped out of school, went from job to job. • Served in WW1.

  2. Hitler's Life • 1923: Tried to seize German government, was jailed. • Wrote “Mein Kampf” (My Struggle ) in prison- the book outlined: • Goals for German nation. • “Aryans” as master race to rule all others. • Called for more German living space for Germans.

HITLER’S GOALS • Military/Political: • Establish National Socialist- Nazi Reich (Empire), himself as leader • Make Germany most powerful military state • Social/ Economic: • Create a master race “Aryan” • Eliminate Jews & deport inferior races • Create wealth by exploitation • Foster new Germanic culture based on Nazi ideals

NAZI RACIAL POLICY • Nazis were racists • In “Mein Kampf”- language used was: "sub-human, non-Aryan, racially impure, inferior." • Enemies were: • Slavs (Czechs, Russians, Pols, Ukrainians, Balkans) • Gypsies (The Rom People) • Jews (focus of most hatred) • Any non-Aryan: Japanese, • allies of Germans.

  5. Hitler in Power • 1933: Hitler gained political power (Germany). • Racial laws enacted immediately. • Concentration camps built to: imprison political opponents, pacifists, racial minorities, religious minorities.

  6. Policies Most brutal policy: The Final Solution- the plan to murder the entire Jewish population of Europe.

  7. WHY DID WW2 HAPPEN? • Why did the German people turn to Adolf Hitler and his Nazis Party? • Why were Jewish people so harshly treated? • What was Canada’s reaction? • How did the world react to Hitler’s racist actions?

TREATY OF VERSAILLES • Intended to prevent Germany from started another war. • Heavy restrictions and fines included- • Loss of territory and colonies • Army reduced to 100 000 • No subs, aircraft or heavy artillery • 5 billion in fines • War Guilt Clause • Germans felt humiliated and wanted VENGENCE

  9. DEPRESSION & UNEMPLOYMENT • World wide impacted Germany • U.S stock markets crashed and banks had no money to lend to Germany • U.S stopped buying German products • Germany had to pay reparations • Inflation hurt the average German • High unemployment in Germany

  10. OPPORTUNITY • HITLER SAW HIS CHANCE: • Germans were bitter about inflation and economic troubles, distrusted government. • Hitler accused the government for the people’s economic problems.

  11. POLITICAL INSTABILITY • Post WW1- Germany had 12 political parties • No party was strong enough to rebuild Germany 3 Main Political Parties

POLITICAL INSTABILITY • No party won a majority, elections marked by violence • People started listening to extremist Nazi views • The Nazis believed: • Gov’t should run the army • Industry should be privately owned • Military should hold power • No democratic government, no elections • Activities of Jews and foreigners- restricted

  13. FAILURE OF THE LEAGUE OF NATIONS • Created to prevent wars, diplomacy and negotiations important • Important countries did not join: • Germany- not allowed • Russia • U.S- because of “policy of isolationism”

  14. LEAGUE OF NATIONS - FAILURES L of N did not take action when: • 1931: Japan invaded Manchuria (China). • 1935: Italy invade Abyssinia • 1930’s : Germany violates conditions of Versailles • Rearms the military • Stations troops in Rhinland • Takes over Sudentenland territory

  15. REACTIONS TO INACTIVITY CANADA: P.M Bennett: “Canada is not an important member of the League...what can one man do who only represents a half million people?” U.S: Woodrow Wilson “ Through our inactivity we are laying the foundation for a future war.”

APPEASEMENT • Appeasement: to give into the demands of the dictators. • Leaders of Britain and France did nothing to stop early invasions of Japan and Italy. • Leaders of Canada and Britain found Hitler to be sincere and harmless. • Most people wanted to avoid war- at all costs • The Great Depression caused domestic problem to deal with, so people were less inclined to get involved in more problems • Some agreed with racist views on Jews- “Anti-semitism.”

  17. THE DEPRESSION Hitler and his party promised Germans better economic state Hitler convinced Germans the "Entente" was responsible for the Depression Hitler used the excuse of the Depression to gain support. RESULT: Hostility towards victorious nations of WW1 Hitler was elected into power
