Many sports are played in teams. Working in groups helps to improveteamworkandco-operationbut what sports can this include? Where else in sport does co-operation occur? Co-operation
This can be thought of as psychological (mental) both in terms of the preparation needed to compete (geeing yourself up!) and in terms of getting away from the stresses of life. Competition Types of Competition?
Coming back to sport after a period of inactivity or completing an almost impossible task, both these allow the element of physical challenge. The London Marathon is one of the biggest physical challenges that casual runners will ever face. Physical Challenge
Beautiful movementsoccur in all sports. It is the observer who is often able toappreciatethe performer and make a judgement but the performer can also ‘feel’ when the movement istechnically correct. Aesthetic Appreciation
Taking part in sport meansinvolvement with other people, either as a team-mate, an opponent or under the control of officials. It is through sport we can makelong-lasting friendshipsand even meet our future wife or husband! Development of Friendships and Social Mixing

What might influence us in sport? Task 1 Produce a spider diagram with as many things you can think of that can influence us in sport
People- Family, Peers, Role Models Socio-economic- cost, status Health and wellbeing- illness and health problems Image- Fashion, media coverage Influences in sport Resources- availability, location, access, time Cultural Factors- age, disability, gender, race
People • People tend to choose the same activities as their friends, or members of their family. • How many people participate in the same sport that their parents used to? • Your choice is usually influenced by others!
Family- Children usually take part in the same sport as their parents. They also often follow the same sports teams. • Peers- The influence of other people your age is very important. It is much easier to succeed in an activity with the encouragement of a friend • Task 2 Can you name any famous parent/child sporting couples?
Role Models: • These are people whose actions are emulated by others. • They are usually successful sportsmen and women. • Good role models usually have positive media attention and do not get into fights or take drugs
Task 3-Role Models- Good or Bad? Write a sentence to explain why the above sports stars are good or bad role models
Image • Fashion- Many activities require certain ‘equipment’. Particular sports brands are expensive, partly because of media coverage. • Sales of sports equipment is often influenced throughout the year. Task 4 • Can you name any examples?
Media Coverage- • The media can affect many peoples choice of physical activity. Task 5 Can you think of any examples?
Cultural Factors • Disability- What barriers would people with disabilities have when participating in sport? • Age- This can affect performance in many activities. What sports may you have to retire ‘early’? • Gender-Most sports are now represented by males and females, although some are harder to become involved in, for example Boys Netball • Race- Your sporting choice may be influenced by your ethnic background. Racist abuse may also affect participation. • In 2008 the first black football manager in the premiership was appointed. Can you name him?
Task 7 Task 6 • Watch advert about racism in sport Questions about advert • 1) Why do they use famous footballers in this advert? • 2) Why do you think Ruud Van Nistelrooy in the advert?
Resources • Availability, location, access and time can be a barrier against participation. • How would you feel if it took you 2 hours to travel to training? Task 7 Write down all the different ‘resources’ you would need to take part in your chosen sport
Health & Wellbeing • What illnesses can you think of that may affect you from taking part in certain sport activities?
Socio-economic • Write down all the costs that are involved with the sport that you play, and the activities you take part during the week. • E.g. Gym- £3 • Football training subs- £2 • School rugby- Free • Swimming- £1.50 • Some people are unable to take part in sports due to unemployment, being in education or working full time hours. • TASK 8-What can we do to make sure they take part in sport?
Homework Using YOUR sporting role model, produce a poster that includes the following information: • Name & Sport • Why are they a good role model? (achievements etc) • Consider the ‘image’ the portray • Cultural factors that may affect their performance? • What resources do they use to train etc?
MICHAEL OWEN, FOOTBALLER Michael Owen is now considered to be amongst an ‘older’ generation of footballers. This may affect his performance as he is not as ‘fit’ as many other players. His age may also increase the risk of injury Owen is a good role model. He does not attract any negative media attention, and does not take drugs or get into fights. He has played for numerous football teams, and has represented England on many occasions. Despite injury Owen has returned to play for MUFC and is still a top class player Owen trains with his team mates at Carrington. He does not have to pay to use the facility as he is a professional footballer
