North west Coast Tlinglit
Tlingit Location. • The Tlingit people lived in group known as KWAN. The people made their homes in the same geographic region. They married and lived together. The Tlingit Indians are original people of the Pacific Northwest Coast. They live in southern Alaska and in British Columbia and the Yukon in Canada.
Culture • The Tlingit culture consists of totem poles that are made of cedar trees. the totem poles are used to tell the story of each clan.
food • the tlingit people were fisher men because they lived neat the sea. They also hunted deer, mountain goats, and birds. Some Tlingit people, who lived in the inland, hunted caribou and moose. Tlingit women gathered shellfish, seaweed, berries, and roots. • Since the Tlingit lived on the coast, their subsistence was derived mainly from the sea. Seals and fish such as halibut, salmon, and herring • were caught with hooks, basketry traps, and spears. Hunting supplemented fishing, but hunting was done primarily for furs. Bears were rarely • killed, since they were thought to be closely related to human beings.
shelter • The Tlinglit built large plank houses to live in. Its base was of a wood frame. Then it was covered with overlapping planks of wood. They generally were large enough to hold many people.
clothing • the tlingit people made their clothes from natural substances. most of the time clothing would be made of animal hide, wool, fur, or other materials found in the area.
Transportation • the tlingit people used canoes for transportation because they lived near the water
