STRESS – The Good, The Bad & The Ugly - I MPI D/FW Chapter welcomed Stephen Harvill, founder and President of Creative Ventures to our November Luncheon at Austin Ranch in Grapevine. As a leading strategic thinker in American business, Stephen has integrated a holistic approach to developing organizational principles. He shared his messages on management to stress to a very energetic and practical format to a very receptive and appreciative audience. He has offered a 3-part follow-up series (this being #1), in which he will re-emphasize the good and bad of daily stress and empower you to take control of your environment and make changes to obtain better results that will lower your stress level.
STRESS – The Good, The Bad & The Ugly - I Stress can cause a storm of emotional impact. By definition stress is our FAILURE to respond to emotional or physical threats, actual or IMAGINED! Not all stress creates an adverse impact. The excitement you feel on a roller coaster is the result of a stress response. There is very little distance between OH NO and OH BOY! Despite the biology of our stress, We get to CHOOSE our responses.
STRESS – The Good, The Bad & The Ugly - I So what does FAILURE to respond to emotional or physical threats, actual or IMAGINED! mean in terms of our profession? Possible scenarios: - Working with a volatile manager who finds fault with everything - Your company has merged with another or is experiencing economic changes and your job may be on the line, through no fault of your own Reality: You have to take the best action for you. - Your response must not being reactive -Assess the root of the situation & weigh the pros and cons of your job - Are there areas you have authority and can change the outcome? - Weigh alternatives in the marketplace - Be ready to act on the best solution for you

Possible scenarios: - You are on a Caribbean island and the electric power has gone off throughout the hotel - Your group is on the golf course and a lightening storm comes up Reality: Your adrenaline allows you to take action QUICKLY Your response must be the result of working with the local venue to assess the situation, obtain input from outside professionals (electric company and weathermen), and communicate with all affected parties as to activity changes.
STRESS – The Good, The Bad & The Ugly - I Despite the biology of our stress, We get to CHOOSE our responses Possible scenarios: - Working with a volatile manager who responds negatively to crisis and stress - Working with a client who is like Jekyll and Hyde when it comes to remembering prior conversations and decisions Reality: You have to work side-by-side with these people. - Your response must not being reactive - Don’t take their action personally - Maintain a cool head - Be prepared to calmly ask/assess what is the root of the situation - Respond by offering a solution and be ready to act on a solution
