The Daily Five Daily Five is a literacy structure designed to increase your child’s reading and writing stamina. • Listen to Reading- Students use listening centers or computers to listen to a variety of text • Read to Self- involves working independently with books/texts • Read to Someone- involves working with a partner with books/texts • Word Work- includes any kind of activity to learn about words and letters including phonemic awareness and phonics skills • Work on Writing- students write and draw Parent Tip: Read to your child every day!

  3. Letterland Parent Tip: Ask your child if they went to Letterland today. Find out what new characters they discovered. Allow them to be Letterland detectives at home. For Example: Finding letters in the newspaper. • Each letter is a character in Letterland and each character has their own story, action trick, and sound

Sight Words • The sight word schedule will be sent home by your classroom teacher • Two sight words per week starting next week • Please help your child: recognize in text, write, and read their words • Children will be assessed on their sight word knowledge Parent Tip: Help your child practice their sight words daily throughout the year. This will help them recognize words in text and will increase reading fluency as well as improve their writing..

  5. Common Core Math • Number Sense • Ex. Counting, greater than/less than, writing #’s 1-20 • Ex. Decomposing numbers: 18 = 10 + 8 • Ex. Using a tens frame • Shapes in Space • Ex. Directional and positional words • Ex. 2d vs. 3d shapes • Ex. Comparing attributes of shapes • Addition and Subtraction • Ex. 7 + ? = 10 • Ex. Fluently add and subtract to 5 • Measurement and Data • Ex. Compare attributes by using appropriate vocabulary such as: longer, shorter, smaller, taller Parent Tip: Practice sorting, comparing, counting, and simple math skills at home. For Example: How many forks? Who is taller? How many more shoes do we need to have 10?

Writing • Tell your story in pictures • Write your name (first and last) • Label your pictures • Understand directionality • Record beginning sounds • Read what you have written • Record ending sounds • Incorporating vowels • Leaving spaces, using punctuation and capitalization • Writing 1 – 2 clear thoughts or sentences including detail about one topic Parent Tip: Let your child sound out and record the sounds they hear when writing. For example: Apple = apl

  7. Social Studies and Science • Animals • Weather • Investigating properties • “I am a citizen” • “We are alike! We are different!” • “What’s around me” • Needs and wants Parent Tip: Spend time talking to your child about holidays, celebrations, cultures and traditions. Make observations about what is happening all around us!
