REVIEW OF OPERATIONS ON SIGNED NUMBERS I. ADDITION Do the numbers have the SAME SIGN? YES - Same Signs:No- Diff Signs Find the SUM:Find DIFFERENCE:(-3) + (-6) = (-9) (+5) + (-7) = (-2) (+4) + (+5) = (+9) (-4) + (+6) = (+2) Keep the sign on the 2 numbersKeep the sign of LARGER #
ADDITION EXAMPLES 1.) 7 + (-11) = 2.) (-12) + (-13) + (-10) = 3.) -4 + 13 = 4.) -4 + (-13) = 5.) + = 6.) 3.1 + (-4.02) =
II. SUBTRACTION First, make all minus (negatives) into adding (positives). Then either: 1.) Make the subtraction problem into an addition problem. Then follow addition rules, or 2.) Assume all subtraction signs as negatives and use addition rules.
SUBTRACTION EXAMPLES 1.) 6 - 17 = 2.) 6 - 17 = 3.) -6 - 17 = 4.) -6 - (-17) = 5.) -3 + 5 – 12 – (-12) – 17 + 4 – (-8) =
MULTIPLICATION and DIVISION First, DO the multiplication or division. Then determine the sign: Count the number of negative signs.... Are there an EVEN number of negative signs? • YES (an EVEN number of negative signs) the answer is POSITIVE • NO (an ODD number of negative signs) the answer is NEGATIVE
MULTIPLICATION EXAMPLES 1.) (6) (-7) = 2.) (-12)(-10) = 3.) (-1/5)(-25) = 4.) (-4.1)(6) = 5.) (-0.002)(-1.22) = 6.) (-2)(-3)(2)(-1)(-10)(-1/2) = 7.) -42 ÷ (-14) = 8.) = 9.) = 10.) = http://amby.com/educate/math/integ_x1.html
