Eagle Requirements • Merit Badges * 21 minimum • Leadership Position * 6 mo. active • Active as Life Scout * 6 mo. minimum • Eagle Service Project * • Demonstrate live by Scout Oath & Law * • Scoutmaster Conference • Complete Eagle Board of Review * All requirements except the BOR must be completed prior to 18th birthday!
Eagle rank is more than just 21 merit badges & a project! The primary emphasis is LEADERSHIP! Remember!
12 Required Merit Badges • Camping • Citizenship in the Community • Citizenship in the Nation • Citizenship in the World • Communications • Environmental Science • Family Life • First Aid • Personal Fitness • Personal Management • Swimming or Hiking or Cycling • Emergency Preparedness or Lifesaving
Warning: Several merit badges require specific, extended periods of time to complete. • If the requirement says: • Meet with your counselor … • Keep records for three months … • You must meet with your counselor AT LEAST three months prior to your 18th birthday or you cannot complete the merit badge in time! • You cannot keep a record of your budget and spending for three months in only three weeks. • Asking anyone to backdate merit badge requirements because of poor planning violates the principles of the BSA and will invalidate the Eagle rank presented as a result of that action. This would be a terrible example to set for other Scouts.
Leadership Position • Scoutmaster assigned or elected • Minimum of 6 months • (one or more positions) • Must do the job - Not just wear the patch • Approved positions are: • Senior Patrol Leader • Asst. Sr. Patrol Leader • Patrol Leader • Troop Guide • Instructor • Den Chief • Troop Historian • Troop Scribe • Troop Librarian • Troop Quartermaster • Junior Asst. Scoutmaster • Chaplain Aide • Troop OA Representative

Sample Eagle Projects • Built church sign • Landscaped church grounds • Repaired church playground • Build picnic tables for an organization • Made improvements to the SOS Animal Shelter • Built chuck boxes for Girl Scout troop • Built bull-pens for community baseball fields • Built cabinets for Sunday School rooms • Built church gazebo • Repaired local youth activity recreational equipment • Built a playroom in a local hospital ER • Painted a mural of Bible scenes in Sunday School rooms • Built a nature trail for the local community • Made repairs to existing nature trail to correct erosion problems
Eagle Leadership Service Project Plan • Meet with an adult advisor before doing much planning. • The project plan write up (see handout) • Must use official BSA Workbook to submit plan and final report (electronic version OK) • Download from BSA National Eagle Scout Association (NESA) website) http://www.nesa.org • Approvals: • Scoutmaster • Troop Committee • Organization Served • Alabama-Florida Council Eagle Board • Must have Council approval BEFORE starting work! • (To begin earlier could invalidate the entire project)
Eagle Application Process • Complete all requirements • Write Project final report including list of changes • Write the report from requirement 6 of the Eagle Scout Application • Submit Report & Project Final Write-up to Scoutmaster for approval • Coordinate final signature from Project beneficiary with Scoutmaster • Scoutmaster & Committee Chairman sign Eagle Scout Application • Scoutmaster submits final Project Workbook, Eagles Scout Application, including Req 6 report, to Council Eagle Board • Council verifies Scout’s records • Scout received letter from Council with time to report for Eagle Board • Council’s Eagle Board of Review with Scoutmaster • Council approval – Generally the same night as Eagle Board • National approval • Conduct Court of Honor
Board of Review • Troop Committee Members May Hold a Mock Eagle Board • Scoutmaster or Asst. Scoutmasters do not participate, but may be present • Alabama-Florida checks records and references • Eagle Board is scheduled after all requirements complete and Council verifies records. • Conducted by Council Eagle Board • It is not a retest of knowledge or skills • Should know the Scout Oath, Law, Motto, Slogan • Be ready to discuss how you live by them • Eagle date of rank is date the Eagle Board is passed. • Important if earning Eagle Palms • Scout MUST be in full Scout uniform (shirt, pants/shorts/socks, neckerchief, merit badge sash with all merit badges, belt, etc.)
Eagle Court of Honor • Special ceremony to recognize only Eagle Scout(s) • Conducted only after National approval • ~4-6 weeks after Board of Review • Planned & carried out by Scout, his Parents & Troop • There is no required format – ceremony tailored to please Scouts & parents • Troop provides framed Eagle Certificate, NESA membership, Eagle Presentation Kit, & Extra Eagle Mentor pins if needed • Some items to consider: • Who to invite - up to the family • Date and time to accommodate schedule of special guests • Reserve church or other location • Reception decorations & refreshments - family responsibility • Letters from public officials - family’s choice • Photo album of Scouting career at reception – compiled by family & Troop
