CAUTION • Many Police Depts give their LEOs a digital camera to carry in their patrol cars. • Take photographs in overlapping segments that flow in one direction around the crime scene • Some courts object to any “extraneous items” (paper arrows, rulers) appearing in crime-scene photographs • TAKE PHOTOS BOTH WITH AND WITHOUT SUCH “EXTRANEOUS ITEMS” • TOO MANY PHOTOS IS BETTER THAN NOT ENOUGH

Evidence Log • Date evidence was received in storage • Case file number • Case title • Person from whom or place from which the item was received • Name of person who received the evidence • Complete description of evidence including identifying data such as serial number • If evidence is signed out all of above must be completed • Signature of officer in charge of evidence room

  24. ALWAYS REMEMBER • Documentation must be careful and accurate • Physical evidence collected thoroughly • Control samples taken • Evidence preserved, free from contamination, marked appropriately, logged consistently • Chain of Custody rigidly maintained
