IRLA • What is IRLA? Independent Reading Level Assessment • Tool used to individually assess a student’s reading progress • Framework to guide instruction for each student • POWER GOALS: Each student works on one skill at a time until mastery is evident. The purpose is for students to be aware of what they need to practice in order to become a better reader and be an active learner. Power goals can be based on foundational or comprehension skills.
Homework Reading Log (tied to IRLA) -Every night, your child is required to read for 30 minutes. -Every 15 minutes will count as 1 STEP. Your child will need to complete 2 STEPS each night Monday through Thursday (30 minutes total each night). -Over the weekend (Friday, Saturday, or Sunday), students will be required to read for 30 minutes, which will equal 2 STEPS. Math/Other Subject Areas -Math: Specific pages will be written in your child’s planner. Please do not send back the homework pages. If you have specific questions, please let me know. -Projects may also be assigned to be completed at home at certain points in the year.
Conferences • Every parent will be contacted to discuss their child’s academic progress. • If you have any questions before then, please feel free to let me know.

We LOVE our volunteers! If you would like to volunteer, you must be approved first. This is a MUST for field trips, special activities, or volunteering in the classroom. We need volunteers for: -Clerical work (filing, pulling papers, etc.) -Spring Carnival -Field Trips
Come to School… School is Cool! • We have a very rigorous curriculum and it is important for students to be at school every day, on time, all day. • Please notify me via planner, email, note or calling the office if your child will be going home in a different way. • If your child misses school, you will need to send in a SEPARATE NOTE WITH YOUR CHILD’S NAME, DATE ABSENT, and REASON FOR ABSENCE (not written in the planner). • Attendance Celebrations: The school will have quarterly attendance celebrations for students with perfect and near perfect attendance!
Encouraging Independence and Problem-Solving • Ways you can assist your child in becoming an independent problem-solver: Give them things to be responsible for at home (ex. putting dishes in the dishwasher, cleaning up toys, feeding pets) Make it their responsibility to show you their binder and get it signed When they ask you for something routine, ask them how they would solve the problem (ex. “My pencil is not sharp.”) Create culture that mistakes are OK! This is one important way that we learn! Your child will be more successful socially, emotionally, and academically if they are an independent, creative problem-solver!
Thank you for coming!
