Year 1: Soul Strand • Three hour seminar meets 4 times per quarter • Commitment to developing Students’ Cultural Competence, Critical Consciousness, and Social Justice Activism • Deep study of Race, class, culture, gender, sexual identity, privilege, and personal identity • Final project: Autoethnography
Year 2: Residency • Launch: Science and Math Camp • Fall & Spring: Two semester long placements in two different CPS schools • Residency Seminar: • Weekly meetings • Focus: Community, Planning • Protocols: Critical Incidents, • Questions Kids Ask, Teach Us • Projects: Beginning of • the Year, Planning Portfolio, Assessment Portfolio, Final Portfolio Presentation
Year 2: Clinical Instructors • What are clinical instructors? • Why clinical instructors? • The greatest effect • The Traditional Model of Student Teaching • CI Development • Summer Camp • CI PD meetings
Induction: Coaching • First year graduates receive weekly visits from UTEP coaches; 2nd year and third years get bi-weekly visits • First Year Induction (FYI) gatherings rotate between schools where graduates meet as a support group through the first year of teaching
Inquiry Groups • Attended by graduates, clinical instructors, colleagues, and even 2nd year residents • Examples: Problem Solving, Teaching with Love & Logic, Affinity Groups (LGBQT, African American)
